2 Good Morning! 11/17/2015 Starter: How would you show motion? (What would the visual look like?) Keep your starters out I will be coming around to check them for credit. Today we will be learning about graphing motion something you will be doing more of tomorrow. Answer: A Graph But before we get to the graphing, the answers from the homework

3 A man is shot out of a cannon at a speed of 25 m/s he is in the air for 3.65 seconds. How far away from the cannon does he land? After you have showed all of your work the answer should be 91.25 meters.

4 A high school athlete runs 100 m in 12.20 sec. What is her speed in m/s? After you have showed all of your work the answer should be 8.20 meters per second.

5 A bullet is shot from a rifle at 720 m/s. What time is required for the bullet to strike a target that is 3240 m? After you have showed all of your work the answer should be 4.5 seconds

6 Please turn in your homework, make sure that your full name is in the upper right hand corner.

7 What does a graph of position and time look like? Runners

8 Now how does speed relate to this? Runners

9 How many of you know what slope is? The slope of a line is the rise over the run. On a distance time graph the rise is always distance, and the run is always time

10 So the slope of a Distance vs time graph is… This is why we always put time on the bottom of a distance vs time graph. Slope = Rise run = d t =speed

13 Part 2 This one is tough, many people want to say that the person is slowing down, but it isn’t, why not? It is going back the distance it started from, so it must be going backwards. 2 70 60 50 40 30 20 246810 121416 10

17 The truth is that what we are talking about is more than just speed. Speed is just distance over time but what we are talking about is direction. That is another crucial piece of information.

18 Velocity When you add the information of direction you are no longer talking about speed you now have velocity. Velocity is equal to speed + direction! How could we very simply show direction? Positive and negative

19 Example Why is direction so important? Video Clip They were going the right speed but not the right velocity.

20 What do you think represents what? Positive velocity means? Moving forward, to the right or up Negative Velocity means? Moving backwards, the left or down
