3 Description of netball Netball is a sport played with 14 players and 2 umpires on either side of the court. On each team There is a GS, GK, WD, WA, C, GA and there is a GD. The ball starts in the centre third with 2 centres inside that third. When the umpire blows her whistle the GA and GD and WD and WA from each team runs into the centre third to get a pass from the centre on their team. If they are in a defending position they will attempt to intersect that pass. They will if the ball Is still in the possession of the team that started with it they will pass it of to the GA or GS on there team who will then attempt a goal.

4 The history of netball In England in 1895, ladies using broomsticks for posts and wet paper bags for baskets played the basketball game on grass. Their long skirts, bustle backs, nipped waists and button up shoes impeded running and their leg-of-mutton sleeves restricted arm movement making dribbling and long passes difficult. The ladies decided to adapt the game to accommodate these restrictions. In 1898 the court was divided into thirds, the number of players increased from five to nine and a smaller ball (a soccer ball) was used. There were two umpires, two scorers and two timekeepers – almost as many officials as players for each match.

5 An umpires role An umpires role is to control the game it's self. An umpire is required to wear a white skirt and white shirt. They must carry a whistle with them which is there main source of control over the game. They must penalise players for things that violate the rules of netball. A netball umpire must also know the hand signals that indelicate to the players what they are being penalised for.
