8 Lessons Learned  Many companies with minimal response  Impact of HIV/AIDS is significant (production, costs, HR, investment)  Problem compounded by mining culture (risky behaviour, mobile, inequity)  Role of contractors and suppliers is key  Gap between policy and practice  Partnership and participation builds commitment (peer networks)

9 Further Roll Out Trilateral approach (Company – Community – Government) Tier 1: Communities affected by HIV/AIDS Tier 2: Small Private small /medium sized mining enterprises, supply chain SME Tier 3: Chamber of Mines primarily; large mining companies

10 Tier 1 Objective Build community, local Government and civil society capacity through –1) consultations, community outreach workshops, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention interventions, peer education and referral systems –2) leveraging the experiences of major mining companies

11 Tier 2 and 3 Objectives Tier 2 : Build the capacity of mining enterprises and particularly local SMEs (involved in mining or not) to prevent and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on their businesses through a training program Tier 3: Facilitate the use of IFC’s HIV/AIDS Guide for the Mining Sector
