DNS Discovery Discussion Report Draft-ietf-ipngwg-dns-discovery-01.txt

The Problem Enable name resolution in the absence of a DHCP server (e.g., ad hoc network) May use DNS (if server) or mDNS (if not) Must be able to determine, if node desires: –1 or more addresses of DNS servers (if any) –Own domain name –Domain search path

Team Goal Provide analyses of the many possible ways to discover the info needed Provide a recommendation as input to the IPNG WG

Previous Status In San Diego, team recommended using site-scoped anycast as the transport mechanism for messages –Also got IPNG WG consensus Presented analysis, but not a recommendation, of payload formats –Team continued to discuss payload formats

Current Status Updated I-D to include anycast recommendation Team’s last meeting included Olafur Gudmundsson (dnsext WG chair) Team achieved rough consensus on a payload format Ready to provide rest of recommendation…

Recommendation Use DNS SRV record lookups as payload –Can be done in 1 message exchange –Can be done without changing DNS Servers –Can be done without any DNSEXT WG work Use “Other stateful configuration” bit in RA’s to disable this

Proposed Next Steps Update Analysis draft with payload recommendation, and revise DNS section –Eventually publish as Informational Start work on a new standards track I-D describing details of actual mechanism –E.g. how to express the desired information in SRV records
