3 Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) –Canadian citizen or permanent resident –Be engaged in full time research in a Canadian graduate school –$35,000 per year for up to three years for the first Ph.D. –$17,500 for one year for the first Master’s CIHR Doctoral Research Award $21000 for a maximum of three years for the first Ph.D.

4 Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP An Excellence Scholarship equivalent to tuition fees is awarded to recipients of SSHRC award excluding recipients in a graduate program at the Telfer School of Management*. It is valid for each session you are awarded an external scholarship If you were awarded an Admission Scholarship it will be replaced by the Excellence Scholarship The Admission Scholarship will be reinstated at the end of the Excellence Scholarship if there are any remaining eligible sessions of the Admission Scholarship This scholarship does not include any TA’s, RA’s or annual cash payment * Please contact the FGPS or the Telfer School of Management for details

5 Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Eligibility to Apply for an Award be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident; be applying for support to pursue their first Master's or PhD. not have already held an award from SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR for the degree in which the student is submitting an award application. Eligibility to hold a Masters Award be registered full-time in the first or second year of a Master's or PhD program in which research is a major component (awards will not take effect until after proof of registration is received); and Eligibility to hold a Ph.D. Award Only those students engaged in full-time research training in a graduate school are eligible for support. At the time of application, all candidates must have completed at least 12 months of graduate study at the Master's or PhD level. Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency must be included with your application

6 Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies CGS MASTER’S Candidates must: be in or have completed the last year of a bachelor degree, or have been enrolled for no more than 10 months as a full-time graduate student (Master’s or direct-entry PhD) at a Canadian institution as of the CIHR deadline (February 1st, 2009) Awards must be held at a Canadian institution. Applications of high standards will be selected by the FGPS Scholarship Committee. DOCTORAL At the time of application, candidates must: have completed at least 12 months of graduate study at the Master’s or PhD level, and have been registered as a full-time student for no more than –22 months for those who hold a Master’s degree (or who have completed more than 12 months in a Master’s program before transferring to a PhD program); or –30 months for those who have completed less than 12 months in a Master’s program before transferring to a PhD program; or –34 months for those who transferred directly from a bachelor’s degree to a PhD program.
