Welcome to Keith Smedberg LMITS @ Olympus High Bruce Luck – STS Granite District

Why? The kids use it to – Watch fun videos – Watch sports videos – Watch music videos – Listen to music Teacher should use to – Show fun videos – Show educational videos – Share educational videos – Give their students good things to watch!

Part 1 Creating your account Disclaimer. “I am not expert, but I play one at…” I am an explorer and reader. I click on things and read the options! I checked out a couple of books from the county library to get started. Your best bet for help is…. Youtube. At the bottom of the page is a help section!

Create your account Go to youtube.com click on “Create Account” Your “Username” will become your URL. Be careful what you chose. Is this an account with YOUR name or YOUR school? Reasons…. I created a new e-mail address for myself to create a youtube account I did not want it associated with “me” but rather with the school. I thought “media center” is more appropriate than my name.

Account Settings “Mouse over” the drop down and chose “Account”. We’ll get to the others later… It is all pretty easy. Click all the options and check out what you can do. I will go through most of it with you.

Overview The basics. Plus it is where you upload a logo. Go ahead and try it for now. Pick any picture and change it later. Click on insight to see how powerful youtube can be.

Profile Setup Click the arrows next to the sections and don’t forget to save your changes! I suggest not too much information about YOU. This page is NOT about you! It is all pretty easy. Click all the options and check out what you can do.

Customized Homepage I do not think these options are important for education.

E-mail messages For sure check them! I want to know if anyone uses the site! You can always uncheck them if you get too many messages.

Privacy Your page will have ads. You may as well decide which ones! I am not sure if this is per computer or per YouTube page! After you click here, click on the + signs to see sub-categories. Chose your categories! I do not want any unsolicited videos. I don’t have (or want) any friends anyway!

Friends clarification “Friends”. Remember this is a social networking site. If you add a friend you will add a link to their page and you have NO Control over what is said on their page. If there is inappropriate content there and you put a link to it….? Are you going to pay that much attention to what is said on other sites and “unfriend” ex-students? (I think it is extra work.) Example – Wrestling. Should we assume it is okay to add other “Schools” and colleagues? I would hope so. I do not want any unsolicited videos. I don’t have (or want) any friends anyway!

Activity Sharing At this point I suggest NO. I don’t want anyone to know how often I am on the site! Lets not open the facebook/twitter can of worms either! For now don’t do it.

Yahoo Congratulations You created a YouTube Channel! Great! – Now what?

What do you want your viewers to see? Part 2

Page settings Click (not mouseover!) your username and chose settings. Tags are what search engines use to find your site. Each is separate word. I don’t think it is that important for someone to be able to search for a school site and find it. Put a link to it from yourschool website. The “Title” shows up by your Logo.

Themes and Colors A no brainer! Pick your colors and save changes. For you more advanced hackers chose “show advanced options” and put in your own details. Don’t be afraid to play with the colors. You can always change it back.

Modules When you are logged in you can see them all. When others visit your page what do you want them to see? Be careful of subscribers, comments and friends. (Be ready to uncheck if needed!) I do not know what “Groups” is.

Videos and Playlists A little harder no brainer! Pick some choices. These are the things your viewers will see. Don’t be afraid to play with the settings. You can always change them back. You can create playlists and NOT show them to the public by NOT checking the boxes above. You CANNOT create playlists now. We’ll do that soon.

Part 3 Building your site

Adding Videos Click on the Videos link in the YouTube.com bar Click “Education”. Click “YouTube EDU” Pick a category Click on a movie. Chose your category and pick a movie QUICKLY please. (We’re not here to watch videos!). You can always remove it later. You will notice that a lot of videos may not seem “Educational”. Yep. Remember that ANYONE can add videos here. More on this soon!

Videos and Playlists There are a few steps in this picture be sure to do them in order! 1.Click on Playlists 2.Chose the playlist to put it in. 3.Or chose [New Playlist] and give it a name… 4.Click the “Add” button Favorite, Share and Flag? Uhhh, don’t know – other than the obvious…

Videos and Playlists Find some videos and make 2- 4 playlists and add at least one movie to each. Dumb part. We will have to go back and select our playlists as viewable!

Videos and Playlists To get back to here CLICK on your username Now that you have some playlists this screen might make more sense!

Subscriptions Are easy and a smarter way to go. Subscribe to the places that students may never go to on their own. It is easier and faster than building playlists. Click on Channels. Surf around a little until you get to a channel you want. Click the subscribe button. It could be just about anywhere on the page depending on what template they are using! Some channels will have more than one “Channel” and you will get the opportunity to subscribe to them all.

Subscriptions Click on Edit subscription gives you more choices to. As a school I chose the source videos only. You can also Unsubscribe from any channel subscriptions. Yeah it might make your site not as cool as others. You know what it’s like to find good and educational in the same place… Remember, the kids will find “the crap” on their own – you don’t need to send them directly to it! (There are much better sites than Cambridge!) Sorry I did not get a better example. Try NASA!

Subscriptions Subscriptions are better than playlists because they are more “controlled”. If you add some random interesting video to your playlist and a student clicks on it they could be taken to that users youtube homepage and you have no idea what could be there. Link only to sites you “trust”.

Playlist vs Subscriptions Some told me I was being paranoid. I don’t mean to be I just want you to CYA and not push inappropriate content to students! Playlists are a good thing. Build them for special topics. The videos you put there should come from reliable and original sources. People can edit other peoples videos and put video replies to videos. Be sure to preview the videos! Just make sure you know what you are linking to.

Part 4 Creating (and uploading) your own videos

Part 4 Creating your own videos Sorry but this is not a “creating a video” class! Be very aware that many of your current video software has a direct upload to “your youtube channel”. Some even directly from the camera! Oh, its gets even better and easier if you have a web cam on you computer…

Uploading your Own Click on the yellow Upload Button Then click Upload Video And Browse for a video from your hardrive. Check out the record from Webcam button too! OMG – easy!

Uploading your Own Once it is uploaded there are still many many options. Too many to show here. I did find that many of them are quite simple to use. You DO NOT have to change any of these but be aware that you CAN!

Uploading your Own I am not going to have time to get into each of these but play around with them sometime and see how powerful and easy youtube can be.
