Levers and Pulleys

What is a fulcrum? The point where the lever arm moves.

What is a Newton? The unit used to measure force

What is mechanical advantage? Reduces the force needed to lift a load and is the result of using a simple machine.

What is a pulley? A wheel with a grooved rim in which a rope can run to change the direction of the force that lifts the load.

What is a Class-2 lever? When the load is in the middle and the fulcrum and effort are at the other end.

A pair of scissors is what class of lever? Class-1 (2 Class-1 Levers)

A hammer is what class of lever? Class-3

A pair of tweezers is what class of lever? Class-3

A fishing rod is what class of lever Class-3

A nutcracker is what class of lever? Class-2

What is a single-fixed pulley? Has a wheel that is attached to something above the load

Which pulley system does not give mechanical advantage? Pulley A

Which pulley systems will not work? A B C

Which pulley systems will work properly? W Y Z

What is a movable pulley? Has a wheel that is attached to the load.

A car’s tires when connected to the car are an example of what type of simple machine? Wheel and axle

In order to get the water to drain out of your bathtub you need this simple machine. An inclined plane

In the kitchen you use knives to chop and cut food. A knife is this type of simple machine A wedge

We use light bulbs all over our houses. A light bulb is this type of simple machine. A screw

Most of us use stairs everyday. A staircase it this type of simple machine. Inclined plane

During this investigation we defined what a diagram was. Lever Diagrams

Our purpose of this investigation was to assemble and investigate one-pulley systems. One-Pulley System

On this two-coordinate graph our position of our effort was 2.5cm what was our effort ?
