ISAAC NEWTON

Sir Isaac Newton was an English Physicist and mathematician who is one of the most influential scientist of all time and as a key figure in scientific revolution.

Newton made contributions in Optics,Classical mechanics and mathematics specially infinitesimal calculus

Newton's “Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica”(Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) which include laws of motion and universal gravitation.

Isaac Newton was born on 25 th December 1642, a Christmas day at Woolsthrope. He started his studies at twelve year old at King’s school Gantham. Then he joined Trinity College, Cambridge.

Newton conducted a series of experiments on the composition of light, discovered the phenomenon dispersion. He investigated the refraction of light and demonstrating that multicoloured produced by a prism could be recomposed into white light by a lens or a second prism. ACHEIVEMENTS

Newton constructed a telescope, the first known as functional reflecting telescope, today known as Newtonian telescope.

Newton proved the elliptical form of planetory orbits would result from a centripetal force inversely proportional to the square of the radius vector, which is known as Newton’s law of gravitation.

Newton introduced the corpuscular theory of light in which he argued that light is composed of particles or corpuscles, which were refracted by accelerating into a denser medium.

In Principia,Newton stated the three universal laws of motion. First law: An object at rest tends to stay at rest and that an object in uniform motion tends to stay in uniform motion unless acted upon by a net external unbalanced force.

Second Law: An applied force F on an object equals the rate of change of its momentum P with time. F= d/dt (mv) Third Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Newton’s work has been said “to distinctly advance every branch of mathematics then studied”. In the Principia Newton gave idea about infinitesimal calculus in geometric form.

Newton’s monument can be seen in West Minister Abbey.

A statue of Issac Newton, looking at an apple at his feet, can be seen at the Oxford University Museum of Natural history
