1 The Beginnings of Hinduism The mixing of Aryan culture and the cultures of the local people led to the development of Hinduism. Hindus believe in a single spiritual power, brahman. Hindu gods are different expressions of brahman. 2 The Teachings of Hinduism Hindus have texts, such as the Upanishads, which help them understand their religion. One of the central ideas in Hinduism is reincarnation. This is the idea that after death, a person’s soul is reborn in another body. A person’s actions in this life will determine the nature of the next life. The duties of each person are known as dharma. 3 The Practice of Hinduism Hindus do not all practice their religion in the same way. Some practice the physical exercises of yoga to free their souls. Others practice the yoga of selfless deeds or the yoga of devotion.
