1 Wireless Sensors and Actuation Networking for Fly-by-Wireless (FBW) Avionic Control Applications & Wireless Systems Immunity in Electromagnetic Environment for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) Anader Benyamin-Seeyar, Ph.D., SM’IEEE Adjunct Professor @ Concordia University and Communications & IT Chapter Chair of IEEE Montreal Section anader.benyamin@ieee.org CANEUS FBW 2010 Workshop in Maine (Wi-Testbed Project)

Project Objectives: 2 Implement a wireless testbed to evaluate all possible avionic control applications using the most appropriate protocol(s) for critical communications with all aircraft’s sensors and actuators: - Identify key performance nodes (sensors,…) - Characterize indoor /outdoor aircraft channels - Select wireless communication protocol within the aircraft - Develop End-user based applications - Performance measurements - Run extensive testing In-Lab and In-Flight operations - Test for resistance to EMI/EMP/HIRF

Stakeholders Needed 3 – BOMBARDIER, Bell Helicopter, Pratt & Witney, Sikorsky, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Airbus, GE, Honeywell, Embraer – Transport Canada / Industry Canada – CSA – NASA – DRDC – FAA – ESA – Others

Challenges Communication with stakeholders Funding Intellectual property agreement Multisite activities Frequency band selection Resources (equipment, team building) Project execution Certification process Others 4

What has been done? Bi-weekly telecon calls with almost all Initial team was built (MOU agreement was signed) Concept of Operation for the Wi-Testbed document was created Detailed Application was submitted to Quebec’s MDEIE funds for the Project (Development program) Investigated to apply for NSERC’s CRD, IRAP & SADI, NRC’s SWP and Industry Canada’s IRB (US & Can), Thought for collaborative USA (SBIR) - Canada, Spain (Catalonia) - Quebec, and France-Canada sources IP agreement is in-progress 5
