Vision for ICT

This is a presentation that I used for a talk at the BSF bidders conference (13 June 2008) I have added yellow boxes which briefly explain how I developed the slides Don’t just agree with what I’ve said here – try to think critically. If you think this is cobblers then say so and start coming up with your ideas

Vision for ICT Do we really want this to be the vision for students using ICT? What do you think?

“I can see a day when kids will bring their own intelligent learning devices for use in the classroom” Jerome Morrisey National centre for Technology in Education (NCTE), 1997 This is complete rubbish – students already do this. Their intelligent learning device is their brain!

Stuck in an upgrade tunnel? Are we happy just continually upgrading equipment every 3 or so years? Does that provide the added value we need?

At Neale-Wade At Neale-Wade we’ve made great use of tools like blogs – a blog now powers the most interesting part of our website. The cost? Nothing to purchase – is free ‘open source’ software – cost is in the time staff & students spend on it.

The audience is warned not to ask James any questions

James warns the audience not to ask Mr Field any questions Example of how we showcase students’ excellent work – but not just with us talking, but by involving students themselves. Surely we need to do more of this in the future?

Podcasting Wii remote whiteboard Blogging Wikis Moodle Vodcasting Discussion forum Authoring Equipping students with learning tools rather than office skills

Podcasting Wii remote whiteboard Blogging Wikis Moodle Vodcasting Discussion forum Authoring Do you know about all of those concepts in the previous slide? If not, this could be one area that you need to investigate further...

Future technologies? How can we plan for future developments in 5, 10, 20 years time? BSF asks you to do this...

Three of the most intelligent men in the world? Jon Postel, Steve Crocker, and Vint Cerf They are 3 of the most intelligent men in the world. They designed the technology behind the internet – but look at the network they’ve created. Can they all speak and listen to each other? Look carefully! The most intelligent people offer incredible insight and ideas – but here they haven’t been practical (or are just being a bit silly). What does this suggest?

Fundamentals Focus on the learning Critically analyse the ICT Focus on added value This is what I suggested at the BSF launch event – our focus has to be on the learning rather than the actual technology

Andragogy Term being used by many educators and is actually changing in meaning. Now stands for the “art and science of learning”. Normally in schools we talk about ‘Pedagogy’, which means the “art and science of teaching”. Why might it be so important to talk about andragogy rather than pedagogy?

Engaging and exciting Enthusiasm Thirst for learning This is what I feel any ICT solution or plan has to focus on – not spending millions on funky stuff, but rather resources and ideas that can support high level, exciting learning

Stop talking about opportunity – instead we need to make it happen!

Flexibility Encouraging innovation Connecting with learning This is what I think ICT in a successful school in the future will offer.

Effective use of ICT This is my goal – where everyone can enjoy their use of technology and clearly say how it has had a positive impact

Power up not power down The key message I ended the talk on – how we need to make use of all the technology students now have – not just tell them to switch their phones off in school. We need to use the technology that is available...
