AND SENTENCE STRUCTURE CINDERELLY

VARIETY “Variety is the spice of life!” What are some things that are good to have a variety of? Colored pens? Jelly Bean flavors? …? No one wants to read an essay where every sentences sounds the same. Especially not me. Give me some spice! You need to VARY your sentence structure to avoid sounding monotone in your writing.

TYPES OF SENTENCES Simple sentences: a simple sentence consists of a subject and a predicate. Expresses one complete thought. They are super easy to write and understand. They are also, super BORING. These are okay for basic (novice) readers and writers. You are neither. “The dog barked.” “The cat yowled.” “The dog and the cat are very loud.” “Aaron draws very well.” “Ms. Gustaves is bored.”

TYPES OF SENTENCES Compound Sentences: A compound sentence contains two simple sentences joined by a comma and a conjunction. They contain TWO or more complete thoughts. Conjunction junction, what’s your function? (Anyone? Anyone?) FANBOYS “The dog barked, and the cat yowled.” “Aaron is a talented artist, but he is super lazy.” “Ms. Gustaves is still bored, for these sentences are average.”

TYPES OF SENTENCES Complex Sentences: A complex sentence contains a simple sentence with clauses attached. A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. Subordinators help to show relationships between ideas. Examples: “The dog that was in the street howled loudly.” “When Aaron handed in his homework, he forgot to put his name on it.” “Although Ms. Gustaves was bored, she is now starting to perk up!”

WHAT STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE? You want your reader to remain interested. You also want your writing to showcase your intelligence and creativity. What should you do? 1.Use different types of sentences 2.Combine short sentences that deal with similar ideas 3.Expand sentences by adding details 4.Vary sentence beginnings (don’t always start with a pronoun or name)

THE SAGA OF SOPHIE AND LINDA Can we help to vary the sentence structure here? Linda went to school. She wore her favorite clothes. She also brought her backpack. Linda couldn’t find her locker. Sophie also couldn’t find her locker. They eventually helped each other find the lockers.

BORING CINDERELLA STORY I tried to tell my friend about the story of Cinderella. She said it was boring and fell asleep. Help me re-write it?
