2 Objectives: 1.1 Business Communications (C): Students will understand communications as applied to personal and professional situations. They will demonstrate competency by selecting and using appropriate forms of communications in a variety of situations. 1.1.1 Diversity–demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with persons of different ethnicities and culturally diverse backgrounds 1.1.3 Ethics–discuss ethics and the need for confidentiality, loyalty, integrity and honesty in communicating with business associates 1.2 Business Environment (C): Students will understand the development and structure of business environments. They will demonstrate competency by identifying the dynamic components of business structure and its relationship to the global business environment. 1.2.1 Business Ethics–define business ethics and explain the importance of ethical standards and social responsibilities in the business environment 1.2.6 Environmental Issues–describe the impact of environmentally sound business practice in a global economy.

3 Chapter Objectives Explain what is meant by the social responsibility of business.. Identify the four social responsibility issues and cite examples of socially responsible actions. Describe the purpose of a code of ethics.

4 Social Responsibility Issues. p. 121 Environmental protection Plan use with renewable resources and reduce pollution. Conserve non-renewable, natural resources, such as gas, coal, oil, copper and iron ore, that cannot be replaced once it is used up. Workplace diversity Reflective of the community in which the company is located. Must have people with the required skills. Safety on the job. Purchase safe equipment, reduce air emissions and water toxins, renovate building to remove hazards and improve ease of use for individuals with disabilities. Employee wellness Sponsor stop smoking seminars, counseling for employees with substance abuse problems, weight loss sessions

5 Costs of social responsibility. p. 124 May eliminate the need for government control. Cost of programs may reduce profitability so spending must be restrained. Businesses spend money for installing non-polluting and safer equipment, for building renovation to remove hazards, for rehabilitation programs, and for community projects.

6 Business ethics. p. 124 Principles of morality A code of business ethics is a standard or guide for employee behavior. How businesses and employees should behave. Written in terms of acceptable behavior rather than a forbidden action. Firms provide training on ethical practices.

7 Assignments Do Now Read Ethical Perspectives on p. 123 and answer both questions with a short answer Calculate business data p.127 # 25 Read and calculate answer in an Excel spreadsheet, show your work. Give a short explanation as to your answer. Workshop Discussion (Each person writes response in notebook.) Decision-Making Strategies p. 127 Open and save in Microsoft Word document.
