1 The new Learning and Development Pathways for RCN Representatives

2 Purpose of the Future Activist Programme u To develop a UK-wide framework which will facilitate consistency in representatives’ learning and development across the four countries. u Each pathway (steward, safety rep and learning rep) will be based upon the agreed RCN role descriptors and the appropriate ENTO standards which will be mapped to the role descriptors.

4 Pathway overview (1) u three modules: –Module 1: Foundation (5 days) –Module 2: Development (5 days) –Module 3: Advanced workshops / masterclasses for experienced reps.

5 Pathway Overview (2) u 1. Becoming active u Self assessment against the generic and specialist parts of the RCN role descriptor u Personal development planning with support u 2. Developing as an active learner u Skills development based upon the core knowledge required to be an RCN Representative u 3. Being active u Identifying and progressing work based issues u Supported work based learning u 4. Staying active u Ongoing support and development following the principles of life long learning u Completion and ‘signing off’ of an evidence based portfolio that demonstrates competence against agreed standards

11 RCN Operational Objective 09/10 Complete and expand the RCN Future Activist Programme UK Wide Work Programme for 09/10 u Implement standardised learning and development programme for RCN Activists across the UK u Identify and work with a professional accreditation provider to demonstrate the above programmes meet UK standards u Design and implement a UK mentorship programme as part of the above that enable RCN representatives to be mentored in role to demonstrate their competence u Build a vibrant RCN learning reps community through union learn funding and share the learning across the UK
