THE TEMPTATIONS OF JESUS LUKE 4:1-13

Why study these temptations? To learn from Jesus and become more like Him 2 Cor. 3:17-18 To become more aware of Satan’s devices 2 Cor. 2:11 To be better equipped to overcome our temptations 2 Tim. 3:16-17 To give others hope in their struggle against sin 2 Tim. 2:24-26, Heb. 2:18

The Setting “Immediately” after baptism Mark 1:12- 13 Alone in the wilderness Fasted 40 days

Three Avenues of Temptation 1 John 2:16 Lust of the flesh Lust of the eyes The pride of life Make stone into bread Showed all the kingdoms of earth “If you’re the Son of God, the angels will take care of you”

Jesus’ Response “It is written” Psalm 119:11 Tempted in all points but without sin Hebrews 4:15, 2:18 Process of temptation James 1:14-15 1. desire (natural condition of man) 2.enticed (sinful idea introduced based on desire) 3.conceived (sin in heart) 4.sin (action) 5.death (consequence)

The First Temptation Stone into bread (lust of the flesh) Physical needs are not sinful Bread from stone is not sinful WHERE IS THE SIN? Physical needs must not be priority Deuteronomy 8:2-3 Satan offers a shortcut (food without work) Genesis 3:17-19; James 5:7

The Second Temptation Showed all the kingdoms (lust of the eyes) Did Jesus desire this authority? What did Jesus receive after His death? Satan offers a shortcut against God’s will Satan offers LESS than what God gives! God’s plan required sacrifice Ephesians 1:19-23, Heb. 12:1-3, Matt. 28:18

The Third Temptation Satan (mis)uses scripture! (Psalm 91) –Four common errors: –Taking part as the whole (out of context) Faith only –Taking figurative as literal Premillenialism

The Third Temptation Satan (mis)uses scripture! (Psalm 91) –Four common errors: –Taking conditional as unconditional Calvinism –Taking text out of context Judge not

The Third Temptation Other forms of the same temptation: –Matt. 12:22-42 –Matt. 16:21-23 –Matt. 27:39-46 What does Satan offer? Another shortcut Painless, quick, carnally “effective” Jesus proved He is the Son of God by OBEYING His Father!

The Third Temptation Pride is the most powerful temptation Pride often uses the other temptations Genesis 2:9, 3:6 Satan promises happiness but cannot deliver his way (deceiver) God’s way provides true happiness and MORE

The Result A perfect sacrifice Romans 3:23-26 A perfect High Priest Hebrews 4:15 “angels ministered to Him” Joy Heb. 12:2

The Result You can have the same result in Christ through forgiveness by Faith Romans 10:9-10, Repentance Romans 2:4, Confession Romans 10:9-10, Baptism Romans 6:3-4, Living no longer in sin Romans 6:1-7
