11 General Information (con’t) School Hours 7:55 AM – 2:25 PM Classes English, Math, Science, Social Studies + Literacy, PE, and/or Exploratory Advisory Program Lunch 30 minute lunches

12 6 TH GRADE 6 th Grade Teams are in the back of the building 4 Teams Each team has… –Approximately 100 students –Team Teachers: English, math, science, and social studies teacher (sometimes a resource teacher) –Students will also have a literacy class taught by a team teacher –Advisory Program

13 BREAKFAST PROGRAM 7:35 – 7:55 AM Multipurpose C

14 LUNCH PROGRAM All free / reduced lunch applications are due by September 30 th.

15 ADVISORY PROGRAM What? A program in which a group of students and an advisor (teacher) get together… Goal? To establish relationships for learning between students and teachers… When? Once a week (mainly on Tuesday) 50 minutes

16 ULSS A SHIFT IN THINKING… In the past, services were provided to students once it was determined that they needed academic and/or behavioral support. Now, services should be provided to students immediately if achievement begins to lag.

17 RTI An approach that requires educators to match instruction to the academic needs of students (differentiated instruction). Responsibility for student achievement is a team effort (student, family, regular and special educators, other service providers) Intervention is most effective within the context of the regular classroom. Most modifications are considered good teaching practices for ALL students.

18 WHY THIS MAKES SENSE: Everyone has a unique learning style. If we appropriately differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, achievement will likely improve. Sometimes, we need help learning something new. We may need extra one-on-one support or a model in order to accomplish a task – that doesn’t make us special education adults, it makes us human.

20 SUMMER READING “We read to know we are not alone.” C.S. Lewis Requirements Read two books totaling at least 250 pages. OR Read three or more books totaling at least 250 pages. Select and complete one response per book Responses are due by the first Friday (Aug. 29th ) following the opening of school.
