2 What is Careers ? A class to help you: Prepare for post secondary and careers Achieve Academic Success Make the most of your High School Career

3 How will Careers Help? Navigate through your senior year. Transition to life after GK (college, military, apprenticeship, employment, etc.). Prepare your portfolio. (graduation requirement) Prepare for your Student Led Conference. (graduation requirement) Careers class with a different name.

4 Why Do I Need Careers? It is a graded course. Bethel School District/WA State graduation requirement Counts toward Athletic and Activity eligibility Helps keep you on track to graduate and plan for your future.

5 When Does Careers Meet? Mondays and Fridays between 2 nd and 3 rd periods.

6 Your Advisor Is Here To SUPPORT your academic achievement. ADVOCATE for you when you need help. Help you NAVIGATE through your senior year. Help you PLAN for post GK life. Help you with APPLICATIONS (college, scholarship, employment, apprenticeship, etc.). Help you BUILD your portfolio. Help you prepare your STUDENT LED CONFERENCE. Not just a pretty face!

7 Portfolio Requirements 3 inch three ring binder with dividers and page protectors. Three portfolio sections: –LEARNER –CAREER –CITIZEN

8 LEARNER Documents Four Best Works –Must be something where you did your best, learned something, and are proud of your work. –Must be from 4 different classes. –One due each quarter. –Your teachers may give you recommendations for Best Work submissions. Goal Setting Progress Report Reflections Semester Reflection Transcript Credit Check

9 CAREER Documents College/Career Fair Updated Resume’ Cover Letter Letter of Recommendation Applications –College –Scholarship –Apprenticeship –Employment

10 CITIZEN Documents (AKA: Culminating Project) Community Connection/Culminating Project –8 hours are required each year of high school. The hours this year must connect to your post high school plans. –Five parts: 1. Proposal Letter – Prior to beginning the project you will submit a Proposal Letter. Statement of your plan, how the hours relate to your goals and future career/college plans. 2. Project– Complete a minimum of 8 hours of community service or job shadow that relates to your goals and future career/college plans. 3. Paper – Write a 2 – 5 page reflection paper on how your community connection experience has impacted your post- secondary plan. 4. Portfolio – Collection of evidence documenting your skills, knowledge, experiences and accomplishments during high school 4. Presentation – Oral presentation that includes a multi-media component highlighting your community connection experiences, what you have learned in high school, and your post-high school plans. Culminating Project must be successfully completed in order pass Careers class.

11 DOCUMENTS Your portfolio documents should be typed or neatly hand written. Make sure your documents look professional and may be read by anyone. Download Careers Lesson Plans and Forms from the GK Counseling Center website

12 PRESENTATION (AKA: Student Led Conference or SLC) Your student Led Conference will take place in May. The SLC is an oral multi-media presentation (given by you) which includes your Culminating Project and documents from your portfolio. You will have 15-20 minutes for your presentation. The SLC is mandatory - it must be successfully completed in order to pass Culminating Project class.

13 Your Presentation Will Address These Questions 1.How have you and how will you contribute to society? 2.What have you learned from your friends/family/teachers/coaches/etc? 3.How will what you have learned academically help you in post-high school life? 4.What experiences have you had that make you who you are? How have you broadened your experiences? 5.What are your post-high school plans? How did you make your decisions/plans? 6.What was your Culminating Project? What did you learn? How did it relate to your post-high school plans?
