3 What Are Appositives? An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames a noun phrase right next to it. The appositive can be a short or long combination of words. If an appositive is nonessential, then you should put comma(s) around it. Appositives usually begin with: "a", "an", or "the", but not always.

4 How Should Appositives Be Used? They should be used to name something again, but not use that name again. Noun or Pronoun, Appositive EX: Your friend, Bill, is in trouble. EX: The chief surgeon, an expert in organ transplant procedures, took her son on a hospital tour.

5 Why Should Appositives Be Used? They should be used because it gives certain nouns titles, names, or characteristics.

6 What Is An Appositive Phrase? An appositive phrase consists of the appositive and its modifiers which may themselves be phrases.

7 H.O.T Topic Appositives can be made by combining 2 sentences into 1. EX My dog is a basset hound. Her name is Tulip. My dog, Tulip, is a basset hound. I have a friend that eats a lot. His name is Jeff. I have a friend, Jeff, that eats a lot.
