4 Equivalent System Mass (ESM)‏  Proxy for system cost  Simplifies various aspects of system into single metric  Volume, Power, Cooling, and Crewtime all converted to mass value with equivalence factors.  Ex. Nuclear Reactor is 1500 kg and produces 3 kW P eq = (1500 kg) / (3 kW) = 500 kg/kW

5 BioSim Configuration  eXtensible Markup Language (XML)‏  Creates system components  Defines store and flow-rate values  Additional attributes (failure and perturbation)‏  Creates crew and defines crew activity

6 The Solution  BioSim can determine system reliability  How long does the crew last?  ESM analysis can determine system cost  An ESM calculator integrated with BioSim could give insight to the values on the mission length vs. cost graph

7 But How?  Two Options  XML interpreter for NASA's Excel and Visual Basic derived Advanced Life Support Sizing Analysis Tool (ALSSAT)‏  Coding of a new JAVA based tool

9 ESMcalc Interface for JAVA based ESMcalc. Currently has inputs for mission length and type, and takes all XML configuration values into consideration.

13 Conclusions  No way to physically test results  Trends are accurate with ALSSAT  Lower ESM was expected  Viable tool for comparing costs of BioSim configurations

14 Future Work  More tests to further validate the ESMcalc program  More complete statistical analysis with more data  Updating calculator with more accurate models  Give user more options for input and output of ESMcalc
