5 What is the purpose of GaTAPP? The purpose of GaTAPP is to prepare individuals holding a bachelor’s degree for teaching by providing them with the pedagogical skills, knowledge, and support needed to obtain a Clear Renewable Teaching Certificate. Candidates are able to complete requirements of the program while employed as full-time classroom teachers.

6 TAPP does not serve the following: ● Individuals who have held a clear- renewable Teaching Certificate ● Individuals seeking a Leadership Certificate ● Individuals seeking a Service Certificate (Ex: counseling) ● Individuals seeking a college degree or college credit 6

7 In which teaching fields may a TAPP candidate earn a Clear Renewable Certificate at Middle Georgia RESA? Early Childhood Education (P-5) GACE for this content area must be passed prior to admission to the TAPP Program. Middles Grades (Grades 4 -8): All subjects offered in grades 4 through 8. 9 How do I know if I am eligible for TAPP? 1 Do you have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university? Undergraduate GPA - minimum of a 2.5 (no rounding up) If your GPA is below 2.5, you must pass the content area GACE at the professional level before you will be considered eligible for participation in the GaTAPP program.

10 Note #1: To be highly qualified the candidate must have:  A major in the content area in which the Clear Renewable Certificate is sought OR  A related degree with at least these number of semester hours(upper level 300-400) in the content area: 15 semester hours for middle school 21 semester hours for high school OR  A passing score in the content area on a GACE or Praxis assessment (if taken prior to September 1, 2006)

11 How do I know if I am eligible for TAPP?...continued Do you have a passing score on the GACE Program Admission assessment? The GACE Program Admission assessment can be exempted if you have a Master’s degree from an accredited college/university or have high enough scores on the SAT, ACT, or GRE. (Master’s degree will no longer be accepted as an exemption as of July 1, 2015.) 12 How do I know if I am eligible for TAPP?...continued Have you completed the Georgia Educator Ethics Entry Assessment? A copy of the completion certificate is needed to verify that this requirement has been met. For more information or to register for the assessment, please go to http://gace.ets.org/ethics/about. 3

13 How do I know if I am eligible for TAPP?...continued Have you completed the pre-screening application which can be found at the Middle Georgia RESA office or on the Middle Georgia RESA website at www.mgresa.org? Mail or bring the application to the Middle Georgia RESA office. Shortly afterwards you will receive a letter from Middle Georgia RESA with notification of whether or not you are eligible and in which content areas.www.mgresa.org 4

14 How do I know if I am eligible for TAPP?...continued Have you been offered a full-time teaching position by one of the eight school systems served by Middle Georgia RESA? (You do not have to be offered a teaching position in order to enroll in the Essentials course. The fee for the course without a position is $500.) 5

15 Where do I begin? 1 Contact all colleges and/or universities you attended and have them send your transcripts to Melissa Smith at Middle Georgia RESA and to the school systems where you seek employment. You may hand-deliver them in sealed and signed envelopes. Copies or opened transcripts are not acceptable.

16 Where do I begin?...continued 4 Complete the pre-screening application process. Applications may be found online or in the Middle Georgia RESA office. There is a $30 processing fee. 2 Pass or exempt the GACE Program Admission assessment. 5 Acquire a teaching position in one of Middle Georgia RESA’s eight school systems. 3 Complete the Georgia Educator Ethics Entry Assessment.

17 Once you are offered a teaching position go to the Middle Georgia RESA website and register for the class, “Essentials for Effective Teaching.” All TAPP candidates statewide must have already taken or be enrolled in this class to enter TAPP. This is an 80-hour class offered at Middle Georgia RESA. (You do not have to be offered a teaching position in order to enroll in the Essentials course. 18 TAPP Essentials for Effective Teaching Classes Summer 2015 The Essentials course is 80 hours. You are required to attend all sessions. 18 July 14-17, 2015 (Tuesday – Friday) 8:30 am – 4:30 pm AND July 20-22, 2015 (Monday - Wednesday) 8:30 am – 4:30 pm AND August 8 & 15, 2015 (Saturdays) 8:30 am – 4:30 pm AND September 1 & 8, 2015 (Tuesdays) 4:30 pm – 8:30 pm

19 Once in TAPP, then what? 1 Finish the Essentials class. Because of the 80 hours mandated by the state, no absences are allowed. 2 The following will be discussed with you by your Supervisor: seminars, journal entries, observations of you while teaching, field experiences by you of other teachers, CST Meetings, mentor meetings.

20 Complete an extensive portfolio. The portfolio is used to document the candidate’s teaching performance and serves as the basis for program completion and teacher certification. 3 4 Once in TAPP, then what?...cont. Take your content area GACE by the end of first year and, if not passed then, you must pass it before exiting TAPP. 5 Take & pass the Exceptional Learner course.

21 6 Once in TAPP, then what?...cont. Take & pass the Georgia Educator Ethics Exit Assessment. Take & pass other courses required of your certification area. Your Supervisor will discuss these with you. 7 All required courses are offered by Middle Georgia RESA as online courses and are included in the TAPP fees.

22 Am I in this alone or will I have support? Each TAPP Teacher in our program receives support and encouragement from several sources of assistance. You will have a school-based mentor assigned to you by an administrator at your school, a supervisor assigned to you by RESA, and an administrator at your school. These individuals make up your Candidate Support Team (CST).

23 What is the cost of the program? $4500 First Year (Required) $1000 Second Year (Required) $1000 Third Year (If needed) Candidates hired in private schools or outside of the MGRESA area will pay an additional $500 per year in program. Unless the amount is paid initially, your payments are deducted In equal installments from your monthly paychecks.

24 Technical Specialist Certificates are now available through the GaTAPP Program for individuals who have earned a technical college associate’s degree and have a minimum of two years of work experience in the field. For more information please contact Melissa Smith at 478-988-7175. 24

25 GaTAPP is an extensive teacher preparation program requiring a minimum of one year and lasting up to three years. The time, money, and effort that it costs you are well-worth the rewards that you will reap as a classroom teacher.
