Russia’s Environment By: Emily Barker and Dejvid Shala

Environmental Issues Has places with severe pollution There were common oil spills during the communist government The people don’t clean up the spills, because of their lacking of the proper supplies Radioactive waste was dumped into the rivers and oceans

Environmental Issues (Cont.) There are many polluted rivers. To be more exact, 75% of the water’s surface in Russia is strongly polluted Many of the places have acid rain Nuclear power left dangerous byproducts The hot and dry weather can sometimes cause wildfires The many factories are the main source of this pollution Pesticides and other heavy metals poisoned soil in a lot of areas

Problems For People and Animals Poison Drinking Water Many people suffer from lung disease Poison Soil can make poison plants that animals eat Only 15% of the urban population breath in safe air, while the other 85% have intake harmful chemicals in the air Life expectancy has dropped drastically due to the air pollution

Why this happened… Did you know that Russia is one of the top 10 most polluted countries? There are factories that make pollution not only in the air, but in the water and land too. The old communist government didn’t really care, and didn’t help protect the environment

Why this happened (Cont.)… A lot of the pollution today was left from the Soviet Union Don’t have the right supplies to clean the pollution up The people there felt like natural resources were abundant enough to afford waste There are many landfills filled with piles of waste

But good things are coming! The Russian people are beginning to see the harmful effects of the pollution in their country. They have began to clean up the oil spills. Hopefully they will be able to save their environment before it’s too late!

ENDANGERED SPECIES.” The Russian Sturgeon fish is in the critically endangered area, or, “threatened.” The Siberian/Amur Tiger, lives in eastern Russia, and is in the endangered range, or “threatened.” The Black-bellied hamster is still in the least concern range, meaning that it is not yet “threatened.” That only means that it could become endangered later. The Long-tailed Goral is a species of goat found in Russia’s mountains. It is currently vulnerable, so it is “threatened” but it does not need to be as protected as some threatened species.
