Lesson 3.4 Day 1 Solving multi-step inequalities Solve: 7 + 6a ≥ 19 -7 6a ≥ 12 6 6 a ≥ 2 Solve as if the > sign was an = sign Check your answer by replacing 2 for ‘a’ in the original equation!

Example 2: Solve: -3x -4 ≤ 14 +4 +4 -3x ≤ 18 -3 -3 x ≥ -6 Solve as if the ≤ sign was an = sign WHY DID MY INEQUALITY SYMBOL SWITCH?!

Try this one on your own Solve 5 < 7 – 2t

Multistep inequality word problems The school band needs a banner to carry in a parade. The banner committee decides that the length of the banner should be 18 ft. A committee member drew the diagram below to help understand the problem. What are the possible widths of the banner if they can use no more than 48 feet of trim? 18 ft W P = 2L + 2w 2(18) + 2w ≤ 48 36 + 2w ≤ 48 -36 2w ≤ 12 2 2 W = 6 ft

Multistep inequality word problems To make a second banner, the committee decided to make the length 12 feet. They have 40 feet of a second type of trim. Write and solve an inequality to find the possible widths of the second banner. 12 ft W

Try this one on your own!! Ernest works in the shipping department loading shipping crates with boxes. Each empty crate weighs 150 lbs. How many boxes, each weighing 35 lb, can Ernest put in the crate if the total weight is to be no more than 850 lb? 150 + 35n ≤ 850

Using the Distributive Property with inequalities Solve: 2(t + 2) – 3t ≥ -1 2t + 4 – 3t ≥ -1 -t + 4 ≥ -1 -4 -4 -t ≥ -5 t ≤ 5 (-1) WHY DID MY INEQUALITY SWITCH?! Distribute Combine like terms Solve

Using the Distributive Property with inequalities Solve: 4p + 2(p + 7) < 8 4p + 2p + 14 < 8 6p + 14 < 8 - 14 -14 6p < -6 6 6p < -1 Why did my inequality sign not switch??

Try these on your own! 15 ≤ 5 – 2(4m + 7) 8 > 3(5 – b) + 2
