Probability Objective: I can explore probability by predicting, comparing outcomes and recording data in multiple repetitions.

What is Probability? Probability is the likelihood that a certain event will occur. Example: What is the probability of rolling an even number on a number cube? 3636 = 1212

Vocabulary Most Likely: The chances are good. (Ex. There are 15 red marbles and 3 blue marbles. What is the probability of picking a red?) Least likely: The chances are not good. (Ex. There are 15 red marbles and 3 blue marbles. What is the probability of picking a blue.) Equally Likely : The chances are same. (Ex.There are 15 red marble and 15 blue marbles. What is the probability of picking red or blue?) Never: Not going to happen. (Ex. All of the marbles in the jar are red. What is the probability of picking a blue.) Always: It is definitely going to happen (Ex. All of the marbles in the jar are red. What is the probability of picking a red.)

Let’s break it down How do I find the probability? Find the total number of items available. Determine what number is possible. Write it as a fraction and simplify if possible.

Let’s take a look! Example: Mrs. Garcia has 5 quarters, 6 dimes, 2 nickels, and 3 pennies in her pocket. What is the probability that she will reach in and pull out a quarter? Step 1: Count up all the coins! 16 coins Step 2: How many quarters? 5 quarters Step 3: Write in fraction form. 5/16

Practice Isaac has a bag of marbles containing 2 purple marbles, 3 green marbles, 4 blue marbles, and 1 yellow marble. What is the probability of drawing a green out of the bag? Nadia rolls a number cube, what is the probability that she will roll an odd number on the die? Hannah has written the letters for the words “Happy Thanksgiving” on individual slips of paper and placed them in a bag. What is the problability that he will draw out the letter “i”? 3/6 = 1/2 2/17 3/10

More Practice Try these on your own Ms. Bark loves peanut M & Ms. The green ones are her favorite. She opens a new bag of M & Ms. It contains 6 brown, 4 yellow, 4 orange, 3 blue, 8 red, and 5 green. 1. What is the probability of drawing her favorite M&M? 2. Which color is most likely? Least likely? 3. What colors are equally likely? 5/30 = 1/6 of the time. Equally likely are yellow and orange. Most Likely = red Least Likely = blue

Closure Turn to your shoulder partner and explian to them how to find the probability that an event will occur.
