4 III. Cattle Towns A.Town located along a railroad, where brokers bought cattle to ship east 1. Abilene, Dodge City, Wichita- Kansas B.Early- general store, hotel, railroad depot, and stockyard C. Prosperous cattle towns expanded. 1.Attracted doctor, lawyers, business people, and families

5 IV. Ranching A.Open range- public land- free grazing land B.Ranch Profits 1.Large corporate ranches- a. XIT Ranch-3.5 million acre, Prairie Cattle Company- 5.5 million acres C.Ranch Life 1.women- housework, fence-mending, herding, and other chores 2.Spring and fall- roundup

6 V. The End of the Cattle Boom A.Lasted about 20 yrs B.Why did it end 1.Price crash 2.Increased competition- barbed wire 3.End of the open range 4.Bad weather in 1885-1886
