Mission Overview Objectives: –Measure gamma radiation during ascent Expecting to discover ionizing radiation increases as a function of altitude –Measure air quality during ascent Expecting air to have fewer dust particles –Record HD video Spike interest of younger students in math, science, and engineering Why? –Public outreach –Verify that atmosphere is necessary for radiation dampening

Design Overview

Results and Analysis Arduino One (environmental data) functioned perfectly Arduino Two (experimental data) had complete failure GoPro camera functioned perfectly Heater subsystem functioned perfectly Canon camera functioned perfectly

Geiger/Dust Sensor

External Temperature

Internal Temperature

Humidity

Pressure

Accelerometer

Failure Analysis ARDUINO TWO Needed more power Moved from one 9V to three 9V Connected leads incorrectly Arduino became corrupted

Conclusions Temperature: 0-10km: Decreases 10km to 20km: Constant 20km to 30 km: Increase Pressure: Ascent: Decreases Descent: Increases Acceleration Some G-Forces as flight initially stabilizes Constant during main ascent Large G-Forces after burst Geiger Counter & Dust Sensor Inconclusive due to corrupted Arduino GO Pro video was helpful and interesting in outreach

Ready to Fly Again No structural modification/replacement Two new Arduino Unos and SD cards New Geiger Counter and Dust Sensor All environmental sensors still functional New batteries

Lessons Learned Overall, Gateway to Space was an incredible learning experience despite our failures. Small details are vital. Our mission failed because of a simple misconnection. Learned time management the hard way. If we could do things over, our schedule would be revamped. We also would have contacted faculty who aided us earlier in the semester.
