What’s your point? Extended Response Strategy

Extended Response Question You can see that Jonas’s society and ours have similarities and differences. Compare and contrast how the two societies create families. Use textual evidence to support your analysis.

AEC Assertion Example Commentary

Assertion“What’s your point?” An assertion is your point, main idea, objective of the response, your opinion, your position Get to the point first and you’ll be sharp! “the point I’m trying to make is…” “My point is…” “ ALWAYS BE ASSERTIVE- USE STRONG LANGUAGE (avoid “I think, I believe, and I feel”… JUST SAY IT! Example: “Families are formed very differently in Jonas’s world than in our society, but they still have some similarities.”

Example - “Text say what?” Always include a SPECIFIC textual example to support your assertion. Introduce your example with phrases like “in the text it says…” “one example from the text is…” BE SURE TO FOCUS YOUR EXAMPLE SO THAT IT ACTUALLY IS CONNECTED TO YOUR ASSERTION – you don’t have to quote entire paragraphs or sentences, you can use just single phrases or words to make your POINT. Example: In the text it says that men and women are “given spouses” and they do not choose them. It also says that children are given to families only after an “application” is accepted and then they only receive “one boy and one girl” because that is the community rules.

Commentary- “What do you think?” Commentary means that I want to know what you think about the quote and the text How is the quote connected to your point? Introduce your commentary (you comments) with words like “this quote shows the reader…” “This is a perfect example because…” “I know …(you point)….because” REMEMBER YOUR THOUGHTS MATTER. THERE IS NO WRONG ANSWER ONLY AN ANSWER THAT YOU DID NOT EXPLAIN I know that Jonas’s world is different from my society because in my world men and women choose their own spouses and have their own children. They are not “assigned or applied for”. However, I did notice that once the family is formed in Jonas’s world that they act like a family from my society. The mom and dad seem to love the children, they work together to be a family and they all seem to care about each other, just like in my society.
