2. Main Facts ★ Bats are the only mammals that can fly. ★ There are about 1 100 bat species wordwide and 22 species are known in Slovakia.

3. Life ★ Bats live everywhere except Antarctica and Arctic ★ They sleep during the day – they are nocturnal creatures ★ They hibernate in the winter and their body temperature can go down on the temperature of their shelter.

4. Life ★ Bats live in large groups of up to 100 animals. ★ They have developed complex of social behaviour. ★ Female breeds one little bat yearly in the spring. ★ Little bat singularizes and lives on its own after 2 month from birth. ★ They can live for over 20 years.

5. Food and drink ★ 70% of bats eat insect or fruit, only few species suck blood of mammals or birds. ★ Bat is able to consume one third of its body weight in insect each night, and several hundred insect in a few hours. ★ When they are young they drink breast milk, and when they grow up, they drink watter.

6. Instincts ★ They are not blind but they don’t see very well. ★ Some species are able to detect ultraviolet light. ★ They also have a high quality sense of smell and hearing. ★ They use echolocation to localize and classify their prey in complete darkness.

7. Interesting facts ★ The smallest bat on the Earth is Kitti's Hog–nosed Bad ★ Length is 29-33 mm ★ Width from wing to wing is 16 mm ★ Weight is 2 grams ★ The biggest bat is Giant Golden-crowned Flying-fox ★ It has a wing span of 1.5 m

8. Vampire Bats There are 3 species of bats which drink blood (two species drink blood of mammals and third drinks bird's blood). They live in Mexico, Chille, Argentina, Brasil and USA They bite their victims with their sharp teeth and release dazing poison. And then they suck and suck and suck...

9. Mythology Bats are associated with vampires and vampires are associated with Dracula. And of course more modern hero: Batman! In some cultures bats bring happines and luck, in some other cultures they bring diseases and death.
