1 What is metamorphic rock?
Heat and pressure deep beneath the earth’s surface can change any rock into a metamorphic rock. Geologists classify metamorphic rocks according to the arrangements of the grains that make up the rocks. EX: (your experience, new question, or WU answered.) This is a very nice picture of Gneiss! 2 What is foliated rock? Foliated Rocks: rocks that have their grains arranged in parallel layers or bands (Ex: slate, schist, gneiss) EX: (your experience, new question, or WU answered.) Be careful how you say schist! People may be impressed – you’re swearing in “geology!”

3 What is nonfoliated rock?
Nonfoliated Rocks: rocks in which the mineral grains are arranged randomly – there are NO layers (Ex: marble, quartzite) EX: (your experience, new question, or WU answered.)
