A Quick Trip Into the Human Circulatory System (also known as the Cardiovascular System) Instructions for the quiz: After answering a question either correctly or incorrectly, right click and choose “last viewed” to go back to the question. Once you’re done with that question, click any blank spot on the screen to move on to the next.

Oxygenated blood flows from the lungs to the pulmonary veins to the left atrium of the heart, through the left ventricle, and out the aortic valve to the aorta, an artery which is also the body’s largest blood vessel. Back to diagram

Unoxygenated blood flows from both the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava into the right atrium, through the atrioventricular valve to the right ventricle and through the pulmonary valve to the pulmonary arteries where it is headed for the lungs to pick up some oxygen. Back to diagram

Pulmonary Circulation The process of blood going from the heart to the lungs and back. Systemic Circulation The process of blood going from the heart to the rest of the body and back. Back to diagram

Capillaries One of the most important parts of the circulatory system, these tiny blood vessels deliver nutrients and oxygen to the cells while getting rid of waste products such as carbon dioxide. Alveoli These are tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen exchange takes place.

Things that can go wrong with the heart: Congenital heart defects – defects that are present at birth which involve abnormal or incomplete development of the heart Arrhythmia – Irregularities in the heart’s rhythm Coronary heart disease – caused by atherosclerosis (fat, calcium, and dead cells are deposited in the walls of the coronary arteries), this is the most common type of heart disorder in adults. Hypertension – when a person’s blood pressure is significantly higher than normal…symptoms include headache, nosebleed, dizziness and lightheadedness Stroke – this occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off

Four steps to maintaining a healthy heart: 1. Getting plenty of exercise 2. Eating a nutritious diet 3. Maintaining a healthy weight 4. Getting regular medical checkups

The End! Click button to exit module

Incorrect… Hint: It goes through an opening called a valve…

You are correct!!

Incorrect… Hint: It goes through a valve into a blood vessel that leads away from the heart.

Incorrect… Try again.

You are correct! But there is a better answer…
