2 What is an ‘Organisation’? In all organisations, a group of people work together to make something or provide a service. 3 Different types of organisations Manufacturing companies Manufacturing companies –Buy in raw materials, and create new products through production processes. Usually sell on to wholesalers, or commercial/retail companies eg Car companies, Clothing manufacturers, furniture etc Commercial/Retail companies Commercial/Retail companies –Selling of goods and services to the general public or other organisations eg High street shops, Internet e-commerce sites Service companies Service companies –Sell skills, knowledge and services of their staff eg accountants, solicitors, call-centres Utilities Utilities –Transport, water, electricity, gas Public Service Public Service –Funded through government budgets eg doctors and hospitals, schools/colleges, BBC Financial organisations Financial organisations –Banks, Building Societies, Stock-exchange, Insurance companies, Financial advisers etc

4 Functions within Organisations Most organisations have staff who have particular responsibilities (such as dealing with sales, creating products, undertaking research).
