Chapter 7 Factoring Methods Ms. Fisher

7.3 Factoring x² +bx +c TUES 02/03 8:46-9:42am Objective: Factor Quadratic trinomials What is a Quadratic trinomial?  CH6 Exponent to the 2 nd power= quadratic Three terms x² +bx +c Warm-Up: What are the factors of 18?  Everyone Whole Group Remember the definition of factor:  Factors: Numbers that are multiplied to find a product. A number is divisible by its factors. 18 9 2 18 1 6 3 Begin Warm-Up

7.3 Factoring x² +bx +c Agenda: Whole group- Introduce section 7.3 Warm-up Station Rotations: 14 mins each Teacher Station #1: James, Nikki, and Eric Mrs. R Station #2: Alex, Maddie, Christian Study Island/break Station #3: Leo, and Melody Station 1: When in station 1 you will be taught the lesson Station 2: When in station 2 you will do independent work and practice the skill set you were just taught. Mrs. R will be there to assist you if needed. Station 3: Study Island then Break Set Timer 14 mins

7.3 Factoring x² +bx +c In this lesson you will learn how to factor a trinomial into two binomials x² +bx +c (x+_) (x+_) Remember the definition of factor:  Find two FACTORS of c whose sum is b If no such integers exist, the trinomial is not factorable! Example: x² +9x +18 Factors of 18 Sum 1*18 = 18 1 and 18 19 1+18 = 19 not 9 NO 2 and 9 11 NO 3+6= 9 3*6 3 and 6 9 YES!!! (x+3) (x+6)= x² What does that mean?

Back to slide #4 Formula for Factoring Trinomials ax² + bx + c 1.Identify a, b, and c in the trinomial ax² + bx + c 2. Write down all factor pairs of c 3. Identify which factor pair adds up to equal b 4. Identify which factor pair multiplied together equals c 5. Substitute factor pairs into 2 binomials

7.3 Factoring x² +bx +c How do you check your answer? Use the FOIL method!! (x+3) (x+6) should equal x² +9x +18 X * X = X² X * 6 = 6X 3 * X = 3X 3 * 6 = 18 X² +9X +18 YES!! Works!! First Outer Inner Last

Independent Work Time  Small group with Ms. Fisher Station #1 page 476 #’s 4-15 – White boards needed  Independent work Time Station #2 Page 476 20-31- Textbooks and Paper needed  Station 3: IPAD and Laptop

Station #2: Factor Each Trinomial 4. x² + 4x +3 (x+3) (x+1) b/c 3 * 1= 3 and 3+1 = 4 5. x² +10x + 16 (x+2) (x+8) b/c 8 * 2= 16 and 8+2= 10 6. x² +15x+44 (x+11) (x+4) bc 11*4 = 44 and 11+4 = 15 7. x² -7x +6 (x-6) (x-1) bc -6 * -1= 6 and -6- 1= -7

Station #2: Factor Each Trinomial 8. x² -9x +14 (x-7) (x-2) bc -7 * -2 = 14 and -7-2= -9 9. x² -11x +24 (x-8) (x-3) bc -8 * -3 = 24 and -8-3= -11 10. x² -6x -7 (x-7) (x+1) bc -7 * 1= -7 and -7+1 = -6
