8 8 CREATING A DOCUMENT BY LAUNCHING AN APPLICATION PROGRAM  Program – is a set of computer instructions that carries out a task on the computer Application program – accomplishes a specific task for which the program was designed  Word processing program  Spreadsheet program  Presentation graphics program  Application-centric approach the method to create the first document Windows terminology for opening an application program and then creating a document

9 9 CREATING A DOCUMENT BY LAUNCHING AN APPLICATION PROGRAM  Click the Start button.  Point to All Programs on the Start menu.  Point to Accessories on the All Programs submenu.  Point to Notepad on the Accessories submenu. Click Notepad

10 10 Type the following information in Notepad, pressing the ENTER key to move to the next line: insertion point The insertion point is a flashing vertical line that Indicates the point at which text typed on the keyboard will display.

11 11 SAVING A DOCUMENT ON THE DESKTOP  File name – assigned to all documents as a way to identify them.  Click File on the menu bar and then point to Save As Click Save As

12 12 Type Sanchez Reminders (Monday) in the File name text box. Point to the Desktop icon on the shortcut bar. Click the Desktop button and then point to the Save button in the Save As dialog box Click the Save button

13 13 PRINTING A DOCUMENT FROM AN APPLICATION PROGRAM  Click File on the menu bar and then point to Print  Click Print

16 16 CREATING AND NAMING A DOCUMENT ON THE DESKTOP  Document-centric approach Ex: Creating a blank document on the desktop and then using Notepad to enter data into the document  Right-click an open area on the desktop, point to New on the shortcut menu, and then point to Text Document on the New submenu  Click Text Document

22 22 MOVING MULTIPLE DOCUMENTS TO THE MY DUCUMENTS FOLDERS  Click the Sanchez icon on the desktop. While holding down the CTRL key, click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon on the desktop, and then release the CTRL key  Drag the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon onto the Start button on the taskbar. Do not release the left mouse button

23 23 Drag the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon onto the My Documents command on the Start menu. Do not release the left mouse button

26 26 ARRANGING THE ICONS IN THE MY DOCUMENTS WINDOW  Title view – displays the files and folders as titles, which consist of an icon and icon description.  Large Icons format – refers to the large size of the icon  Click View on the menu bar, point to Arrange Icons by on the View menu, and then point to Show in Groups on the Arrange Icons by submenu

27 27 ARRANGING THE ICONS IN A FOLDER BY FILE TYPE  Click View on the menu bar, point to Arrange icons by on the View menu, and then point to Type  Click Type

28 28 CREATING A FOLDER IN THE MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER  Point to Make a new folder in the File and Folder Tasks area of the My Documents window  Click make a new folder. Type Daily Reminders in the icon title text box and then press the ENTER key.

29 29 MOVING DOCUMENTS INTO A FOLDER  Right-drag the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) icon onto the Daily Reminders folder icon. Point to Move Here on the shortcut menu  Click Move Here

30 30 Right-drag the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon onto the Daily Reminders icon. Click Move Here on the shortcut menu. Point to the Close button in the My Documents window Click the Close button

31 31 CREATING FOLDER SHORTCUTS  Shortcut A link to any object on the computer or on a network, such as a program, file, folder, disk drive, Web page, printer, or another computer

32 32 ADDING A SHORTCUT ON THE START MENU  Click the Start button. Click My Documents on the Start menu. Point to the Daily Reminders icon in the My Documents window  Drag the Daily Reminders icon onto the Start button. Do not release the left mouse button

35 35 REMOVING A SHORTCUT FROM THE START MENU  Click the Start button. Right-click Daily Reminders on the Start menu and then point to Remove from This List on the shortcut menu  Click Remove from This List  Click an open area of the desktop to close the Start menu

Right- drag the Daily Reminders icon from the My Documents window into an open area of the desktop. Point to Create Shortcuts here on the shortcut menu  Click Create Shortcuts Here. 37 37 OPENING A FOLDER USING A SHORTCUT ON THE DESKTOP  Double-click the Shortcut to Daily Reminders folder icon on the desktop. Move and resize the Daily Reminders shown in the following figure:

38 38 OPENING AND MODIFYING A DOCUMENT STORED IN A FOLDER  Double-click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) icon in the Daily Reminders window  Press the DOWN ARROW key five times to move the insertion point to the end of the document. Type 4. Notify Sales – NetMeeting at 3:00 p.m. and then press the ENTER key

39 39 OPENING MULTIPLE DOCUMENTS  Multitasking Multiple programs running at the same time  Click the Daily Reminders button on the taskbar. Point to the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon in the Daily Reminders window  Double-click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon. Press the DOWN ARROW key five times to move the insertion point to the end of the document in the Notepad window. Type 4. Call Dan – Birthday Party for Carol and then press the ENTER key

40 40 OPENING AN INACTIVE WINDOW  Click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) – Notepad button on the taskbar. When the window opens, type 5. Dinner with Art Perez – 7:00 p.m., The Crab House and then press the ENTER key

41 41 TASKBAR BUTTON GROUPING  Displays a single button on the taskbar for multiple documents opened by the same application program

42 42 MINIMIZING ALL OPEN WINDOWS  Show the Desktop command – makes the desktop visible by minimizing all open windows on the desktop.  Right-click an open area of the taskbar and then point to Show the Desktop  Click Show the Desktop

43 43 CLOSING MULTIPLE WINDOWS  Right-click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) – Notepad button on the taskbar. Point to Close  Click Close. Point to the Yes button in the Notepad dialog box  Click the Yes button. Right-click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) – Notepad button on the taskbar. Point to Close.  Click Close. When the Notepad dialog box displays asking if you want to save the changes, click the Yes button

44 44 PRINTING A DOCUMENT FROM WITHIN A FOLDER  Click the Daily Reminders button on the taskbar. Click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon in the Daily Reminders folder to select the icon. While holding down the CTRL key, click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) icon, and then release the CTRL key.

45 45 1.Right-click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) icon. Point to Print on the shortcut menu. 2. Click Print 3. Click the Close button in the Daily Reminders window

46 46 COPYING A FOLDER ONTO A FLOPPY DISK  Backup – the process of making a copy of a folder and the documents within the folder so that of the folder or its contents are accidentally lost or damaged, you do not lose work.  Insert a floppy disk into drive A  Click the Start button. Click My Documents on the Start menu. Right-click the Daily Reminders icon in the My Documents window. Point to Send To on the shortcut menu. Point to 3½ Floppy (A:) on the Send To submenu

48 48 OPENING A FOLDER ON A FLOPPY DISK  Click the Start button and then click My Computer. Point to the 3½ Floppy (A:) icon in the My Computer window  Double-click 3½ Floppy (A:). Point to the Daily Reminders icon in the 3½ Floppy (A:) window

49 49 Double-click the Daily Reminders icon. Point to the Close button on the Daily Reminders title bar. Click the Close button. Remove the floppy disk from drive A.

50 50 DELETING SHORTCUTS, FILES, AND FOLDERS  Delete a shortcut – you delete only the shortcut and its references to the file or folder  Delete an icon – you delete the actual file.  Recycle Bin – is an area on the hard disk that contains all the items you have deleted not only from the desktop but from the hard desk as well.  Right-drag the Shortcut to Daily Reminders icon onto the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. Point to Move Here on the shortcut menu.

52 52 DELETING MULTIPLE FILES  Click the Start menu. Click My Documents. Double-click the Daily Reminders icon in the My Documents folder. Place the mouse pointer below and to the right of the two document icons in the Daily Reminders window. Drag through until both icons are selected. Point to Delete the selected items in the Daily Reminders Window

53 53 Click Delete the selected items. Point to the Yes button in the Confirm Multiple File Delete dialog box.

58 58 WORKING WITH USER ACCOUNTS  Computer administrator – is the person responsible for setting up and managing a computer or network of computers, assigning passwords and permissions to computer users, creates a user account for each new computer user, and helping computer user with computer or networking problems  User account – is a collection of all the information Windows XP needs to know about a computer user.  Permission – certain privileges based upon the account type assigned to the user by the computer administrator.

59 59 WORKING WITH USER ACCOUNTS  Domain – a group of computers that are part of a network and share common rules, procedures, and centralized user account  Workgroup – is a simple grouping of computers intended to help users find such things as printers and shared folders within that group. .NET passport – is a Microsoft service that allows you to create and remember only one user name and password and then use the passport to access computers and Internet sites that support.NET Passport.

61 61 PASSWORDS  A security measure used to restrict access to user accounts, computer networks, and computer resources  Password hint – can be created to help you remember your password if you forget it because you have multiple passwords or you do not use an account frequently

62 62 CHANGING A PASSWORD  Click the Start button. Point to Control Panel on the Start menu  Click Control Panel. Point to User Accounts in the Control Panel window.  Click User Accounts. Point to change my password in the User Accounts window

Type lakers in the Type your current password text box, type #1Lakersfan in the Type a new password text box, and type #1Lakersfan in the Type the new password again to confirm text box, and type Brad is a Lakers fan in the Type a word or phrase to use as a password hint text box. Point to the Change Password button. Click the Change Password button. Click the Close button in the User Accounts window. Click the Close button in the Control Panel window.

64 64 CHANGING A USER PICTURE  Click the Start button. Click Control Panel. Click User Accounts. Point to Change my picture in the User Accounts window  Click Change my picture. Point to the dirt bike picture in the list box.  Click the dirt bike picture. Point to the Change Picture button.

66 66 SWITCHING BETWEEN USER ACCOUNTS  Fast User Switching Allows you to switch from one user account to another user account quickly without having to log off from the computer before switching and then log on to the computer after switching Click the Start button. Point to the Log Off button on the Start menu

67 67 Click the Log Off button. Point to the Switch User button in the Log Off Windows dialog box. Click the Switch User button. Point to Guest on the Welcome screen
