Global winds and currents11/27/12 1. Global ocean currents 2. Global winds 3. Map activity HW: Thought questions due 11/28 Do Now [journal] 1. Why does hot stuff rise and cold stuff sink in a convection current? 2. Ask your partner to describe their IDEAL thanksgiving dinner. 3. How do ocean currents affect local weather?

8.10A recognize that the Sun provides the energy that drives convection within the atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents.

Warm Up 1 In your Science Journal, answer the question: “What causes the wind?” Quickly find a partner that does not have your same hair color while staying seated & take turns sharing your explanations. Together, select the explanation you both think is the most accurate. Share with the class!

Convection Currents in Air Draw the set-up and make and complete a table in your Science Journal: InferenceObservation I predict that the bag with the light will….because… I observed that the bag with the light….. My prediction with correct/incorrect because……

movement of heat rising and cool sinking

Hot Air is Less Dense!

Atmospheric Density What is most dense SINKS!

What Can Convection Do?

CONVECTION

Moves air in the atmosphere!

CONVECTION Wind over the shore changes direction because of EARTH’S UNEVEN WARMING & COOLING!

What Causes Wind? Bill Nye Explains Wind in 2 minutes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBqohRu2RRk&feature=related Bill didn’t use the word “convection”… but he described it! How did he demonstrate convection?

What About Convection in Water? Water and air are both move like fluids. They both move due to convection! Just like air, when liquid water is heated, it expands, becomes less dense, and rises. Side note: Water is different, however, because of its unique structure as a solid. Ice is actually less dense than liquid water whereas other substances are most dense as solids!

Examples of convection in liquids Come up with THREE different convections in liquids you can think of! Be ready to explain how the convection current works in your example…

CONVECTION IN LIQUIDS!

CONVECTION causes deep ocean currents!

If you placed your hand above a cup of hot water, what would the air temperature feel like? If you placed your hand above a cup of ice water, what would the air temperature feel like? How does this relate to ocean currents?

CONVECTION DEMOS! - Tea Bag “Rocket” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUYV-h1gCJc - Colored Water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9QJ1vv2WyM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xWWowXtuvA

Global Winds v Convection causes the rise and fall of air in the atmosphere… But what causes the other patterns (easterlies, westerlies, etc) in the global winds?

Jet Streams http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/balloon/scie nce/jetstream.html

Global Wind Pattern Challenge! If you wanted to fly a hot air balloon around the world in the shortest amount of time, which route would you take?

Coriolis Effect The deflection of air or ocean currents due to the rotation of the Earth spinning EAST

Coriolis Effect YouTube: Coriolis Effect

Answer these questions in your journal: 1. Why do we have wind? 2. How does wind affect ocean currents? 3. What do we call the three air convection cells on our planet?

Ocean Currents and Coastal Temperatures

Inland vs. Coastal Cities

Ocean Currents BrainPop: http://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem/oceancurrents/ What is the name of this current? It carries warm water from the Gulf of Mexico!

Why aren’t there straight lines between the temperature zones?

Coriolis Effect… again! The direction of surface ocean currents affected by the Coriolis effect!

Ocean Currents
