6 Emotion versus Emotionalism Emotion must be Rooted in the Word – Reading of God’s love, we should be moved to love (I John 4:9-11). – Told of promises awaiting us, we are motivated to hope (Titus 1:2). – Learning of Jesus’ reconciling work, we are moved to rejoice (Romans 5:10-11).

7 Emotion versus Emotionalism Emotion must be Rooted in the Word – Rebuked by the Word, it produces godly sorrow (2 Timothy 4:2; 2 Cor. 7:8). – Filled with God’s knowledge, we come to hate sin and every false way (Psalm 119:104). – Reading of the warnings in Scripture, we are moved to fear (Hebrews 10:30-31).

8 Emotion versus Emotionalism Emotion must Produce the Proper Fruit – The emotion of love bears fruit in obedience (John 14:15; I John 5:3). – The emotion of hope bears fruit in patience (Romans 8:24-25). – The emotion of joy bears fruit in sacrifice (2 Corinthians 8:2-5).
