QUESTIONS 1.When was this print created? 2.Which country do you think this print is from? 3.What do you see in the picture?

PICTURE HISTORY This picture is from the 1940’s, during the WW2 era (1939-1945). Painted by G.K. Odell in 1942 -Picture was meant to promote sale of Victory Bonds. The money from these Bonds would go toward the Canadian war effort.

APPEAL TO ETHOS The ethological appeal of this poster is that if you were a Canadian citizen it was your duty to protect the innocent from the threat of foreign tyrants and keep their dark hands from consuming the weak.

APPEAL TO PATHOS In the time of war this print was very emotionally appealing! Who would want 2 dark hands of terror and destruction to touch an innocent woman and child? So people would buy Victory bonds to insure that this would not happen to them and their family. -Today this has little appeal to our society simply because we don’t have to worry about the threats of Germany and Japan like we did back then

APPEAL TO LOGOS Logically, the meaning of this poster is that if you didn’t buy the victory bonds you would be sealing not only the fate of yourself but the fate of everyone, including the innocent.

AFFECTS ON WORLD In the end this poster and 9 others would go on to help the Canadian Army by giving them over 8,000,000 dollars This poster is one of the 20 most recognized WW2 propaganda posters due to its mass appeal to the three visual rhetoric's, ethos, pathos, and logos
