1 D i a g r a m m i n g Adverbial and Adjective Clauses

2 Adverbial Clauses 1.Look at your sentence and pick out the parts of speech. 2.Diagram your subject and any adjectives that go with it. 3.Diagram your verb and any adverbs that go with it. 4.Pick out your adverbial clause. 5.The adverbial clause is connected to other part of the diagrammed sentence by a dotted line. The dotted line is placed underneath whatever the clause modifies. Place the subordinating conjunction on the dotted line. 6.Draw a solid line from where the dotted line ends. This is where you’ll diagram the rest of the clause on. 7.Diagram the rest of clause as if it was a regular sentence. 8.If it is elliptical, diagram the assumed unwritten in parenthesis. 9.You’re finished!

3 Adjective Clauses 1. Look at your sentence and pick out the parts of speech. 2.Diagram your subject and any adjectives that go with it. 3.Diagram your verb and any adverbs that go with it. 4.Pick out your adjective clause. 5.The adjective clause is connected to other diagrammed sentence by a dotted line. The dotted line is placed under the noun or pronoun that it modifies. The dotted line than goes to a new solid line. The dotted line will either go to the relative pronoun or relative adverb in the clause. 6.Sometimes the dotted line will have to be bent when the clause starts out with an relative adverb or when the relative pronoun is acting as an object of a preposition or adjective. 7.You’re finished!
