His Commitment 1 Timothy 1:18, “This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare” To commit something is to entrust it Timothy was entrusted to work at Ephesus to stay the course and hold to the truth (1 Tim. 1:3, 4)

Occupies the mind and spends your energy (1 Tim. 4:15) The committed preacher’s progress will be evident Meditate + entirely given = progress Continues (1 Tim. 4:16) Heed to self Heed to doctrine Motive: work to save self and those who hear

5 Questions: What has the preacher done to his “trust” who spends little time studying the teaching of Christ? What has the preacher done to his “trust” who spends little time in preparing his message? What concern does the preacher have for those who “hear him” who has the manner of winging it?

6 Commitment Conforms (2 Tim. 3:10-14)
Carefully followed (“understanding,” Lk. 1:3) Doctrine (apostolic teaching, Acts 2:42; Rom. 16:17; Heb. 13:9; 2 Jn. 9, 10; Gal. 1:6-9; 2 Thess. 3:6) Manner of life (Acts 20:18-24; 1 Thess. 1:5; 2 Thess. 3:7-9) Purpose (to please the Lord, Col. 1:10; 1 Thess. 4:1; Acts 11:22, 23)

Longsuffering (1 Cor. 13:4) Love (1 Cor. 13:1-3) Perseverance (2 Cor. 6:3ff) Persecutions/afflictions (Acts 14:6ff; 2 Cor. 11:23ff) “But you must continue in the things which you have learned…” (2 Tim. 3:14)

8 Commitment Guards (watches to keep)
1 Timothy 6:20, 21: 20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
