2 New Dynamics of Global Commerce Demand New Approaches  Dramatic growth of China is forcing all trading nations to adjust, or be left behind.  Rapid movement of goods and people through global supply chains is a key to success. An efficient, reliable, integrated and secure transportation system is crucial.  Competitors, especially the U.S. and Mexico, are acting aggressively on the intersecting issues of trade, transport and security. 1

3 The Opportunity for Canada Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor is positioned to be the bridge between North America and the Asia-Pacific. Canada’s advantages in geography, transportation and trade converge to present a significant opportunity. –World-class marine, rail, road and air infrastructure –B.C.’s ports 2-3 days closer sailing time to key Asian ports than West Coast competitors –Strong cultural, family and business connections with Asia-Pacific nations 2

4 The Vision… To establish Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor as the best transportation network facilitating global supply chains between North America and Asia. In particular, the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative will seek to: Boost Canada’s commerce with the Asia-Pacific region; Increase the Gateway’s share of North America-bound container imports from Asia; Improve the efficiency and reliability of the Gateway to Canadian and North American exports as Asia’s economies expand. 3

5 The Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor serves all of Canada It is a system of transportation infrastructure, including west coast ports, road and rail connections, that reach across Western Canada and into the economic heartlands of North America, as well as major airports and border crossings. 4

7 The Initiative delivers $321 million in immediate measures Other immediate measures: Marketing the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Lower Mainland Traffic Management System Use of Containers Study Lower Mainland Port Integration Lower Mainland Trucking Forum 6

8 A fast-track consultation and planning process will advance the Initiative. The fast-track process will be based on: Real partnerships with the British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba provincial governments. Collaboration between the public and private sectors. A private sector perspective, building on wide ranging consultations underway, and including strategic advice from key industry leaders. An international conference of experts. Engagement of the business community in addressing the opportunities and challenges with respect to the emerging economic giants in Asia. Decisions for investing the remaining $260.8 million. A long-term strategy for the Gateway’s development. TO PRODUCE 7

9 Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative is about strengthening Canada’s position in international commerce … It delivers tangible results as part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to promote a more competitive, more productive Canadian economy. A successful gateway will attract foreign investment, bring new jobs and skilled workers.
