.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I am going to school for business and Distance Learning offered the accounting class. I took music theory last year through DL and got a lot out of it. I was interested in astronomy so I signed up for the DL course. I planned on taking psychology and anthropology was a good course to accompany it. This class was the only Spanish V available in my school. There was no music history course offered outside the DL. I wanted the experience and the chance to earn college credit. I wanted to expand my horizons and give myself new opportunities. It was a great way to learn the information being presented in the course and to meet new students. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I like being able to interact with students from other schools that you wouldn’t normally meet and take classes you wouldn’t normally take. Meeting other people and having a different teacher with different teaching techniques. Being able to interact with and be exposed to another school who’s views aren’t always the same as ours. I liked how if you missed a class you could actually watch the video tape instead of just hearing about the class. I enjoyed the audio system. We were able to listen to music clearly over the system for our lessons. (In calculus) the elmo enabled our teacher to show his solutions to the problems to the whole class. I liked being able to take class through DL. I would not have been able to take this course without this system. I enjoyed learning about music theory doing the assignments and using the technology in the Distance Learning classroom. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. A new experience working with the advanced technology. Interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The microphones in the other school would crackle when someone leaned back and sometimes the students were picked up more than the teacher. Sometimes there were slight tech issues that were annoying (people hitting the microphones by accident which produced a loud noise.) etc. Our class didn’t get the attention the host site got. Our papers were sometimes lost or never received. The fact that the other school’s students that we were interacting with were loud, rude and did not take anything seriously even when we were taking a test. I didn’t like how the schools weren't all on the same schedule so you had people coming in at different times throughout the period The teacher was unavailable for extra help…. it was kind of difficult to make up missed classes. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone/camera positioning. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: Lack of extra help or lack of one-on-one with the teacher. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Better sound. Perhaps a more effective way to give homework (email instead of faxing everything.) Better volume adjustments. Make sure the teacher visits the other sites and pays attention equally to all schools. Students should have a field trip to meet each other in person. Make sure the kids at the remote sites are just as involved. Talk to them and ask them questions too. Get the students to interact with each other. Some people in our class did but others didn't. Make sure all the students are mostly on the same maturity level. All schools involved should make a greater effort to arrange the schedule so that everyone arrives in class at the same time. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently suggested changes: Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. More discipline to deal with disruptive and disrespectful students.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ It surprised me how well everything went with the program. Everything was good. How I got used to it, because at first it was weird being on camera. I liked the elmo it surprised me when it could switch focus points, going from teacher to desk to class. How easy it is to communicate with the other schools… how smoothly it can run and how few problems there were. I didn’t think I’d like it at first but I did. Its crazy that we're able to have classes with another school. How well we were able to communicate and interact with other sites…how clearly we could understand them and how clear the picture was…the technology was fun. It surprised me how much a Distance Learning class is like a regular class. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. An appreciation for the advanced technology. A need for more discipline in some classes.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wish our teacher had paid the same amount of attention to both classes. I wish we could have had private conferences with her when we needed. I wish he could have understood about the difficulties and tried to give more help. I wish he had more discussions between the two classes. I wish she had come to our school to teach. I wish we had more activities. We couldn’t go anywhere or do a lot because the other class couldn’t do the same. The other students met us once off screen. I wish she could have planned more in- person communications between us. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate Section C Students wished that the teacher would: Not ignore their remote students or pay less attention to the receive sites. Conduct more interactive discussions and activities. Visit the remote students at least once. Make some provision for extra help or private communication.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Our teacher tried to find ways to include everyone by having the girls come to our school for a Spanish food party. We watched films and played games that everyone could participate in. He gave us his complete and undivided attention and also visited us in person. We were able to call her home phone anytime and papers were accepted via email until midnight of the date due. When the fax machine wouldn't work she found another one to use. Our teacher arranged meetings and was good about choosing on people from all of the schools. She gave us her phone number. She also emailed and faxed us notes we that we missed. He went to all the schools and offered to stay after with any student that needed help. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most Frequently Recognized DL Teacher Efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate: Visited receive sites and promoted interaction between schools. Made e-mail and/or phone contact available. Provided extra help and review sessions. Made efforts to resolve technical issues. Used the technology to its best advantage.
