Atoms, Ions, Isotopes Changing atoms
Element Substance with a characteristic set of properties Examples?
Atom Smallest unit of an element that has all of its properties
Add or subtract a proton What do you get? Boron atom Carbon atom ►A new element
Add or subtract an electron What do you get? An ion An ion is a particle with a charge because it has an unequal number of protons and electrons
Subtract an electron Hydrogen Hydrogen Ion ► An ion with a positive charge because it has more protons than electrons +
Add an electron Fluorine Fluorine Ion - ► An ion with a negative charge because it has more electrons than protons
Add or subtract a neutron What do you get? An isotope An isotope is a particle with extra neutrons
Hydrogen isotopes Hydrogen Deuterium ► An isotope has a different number of neutrons
Add another atom What do you get? A molecule A molecule is 2 atoms joined together with a bond
Chapter 11 Matter and Its Properties
Exceptions to the Rule…
Mr. Olivas thinks this is him. I don’t get it!. * Smallest part of an element * Has all the properties of the element.
Atomic Structure Section The Nucleus Nucleus- contains most of the mass of an atom – Protons & Neutrons contains most of an atom’s mass – Electrons-

Chemistry. Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter.
Atoms and Molecules Atom is smallest particle that can be identified as a particular substance. Molecule is two or more atoms bonded to each other.
Isotopes. Isotopes are atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons Most elements in the first two rows of the periodic.

Chapter 2~The Chemistry of Life
The Atom and Its Parts Physical Science. The three subatomic particles are: Proton – Positive charge Electron – Negative charge Neutron – No charge.
CHEMISTRY PART 1 Atoms and The Periodic Table. Definitions Chemistry: The study of the structure and properties of matter. Element: A substance.
Atoms & Elements Biology 137/ RR. Definitions Atom –The smallest part of an element that upholds the chemical properties of that element Element –A substance.
The Atom the smallest unit of an element protons and neutrons in nucleus surrounded by one or > shells of electrons neutral atoms: # protons = # electrons.
