WARNING We are going to be looking at a sensitive topic today. Firstly, no-one in this school publically agrees with what we are going to view. Secondly, as you are year 11, I expect you to deal with these concepts maturely, honestly and openly.

In your tables You have 4 pieces of Christian ‘Propaganda’ Art from the last century. – Identify what the art is portraying. – Is it inherently Christian/religious? – Why is it propaganda? – What is it’s message? – Do you like it? Do you trust it? – Do you think it is acceptable as a piece of artwork today?

What do you think? Your opinions count

Dangerous Internet Propaganda There are fanatics whatever area you look into: – Football Organised fights by some. Clashes between fans. – Modelling Extreme sizes. In Religion we already know this is the same.

The most obvious at the moment is Islam: Fundamentalists. Their extremism has been well documented in the media in the past ten years, starting specifically with the Twin Towers on the 11 th September 2001.

But the focus for us in this unit is Christianity Most of the Fundamental and Right Wing Christianity comes from: – Bible Belt America – China – General extremists

The focus of today’s Christian Propaganda. Anti-homosexuality Anti-atheism Anti-Islam Anti-anything that is not Christian – Basically as with any propaganda, it is against everything, but it’s own beliefs. Everything else MUST BE and IS wrong.

In your tables You have 4 pieces of more extreme Christian ‘Propaganda’ Art from the last century. – Identify what the art is portraying. – Is it inherently Christian/religious? – Why is it propaganda? – What is it’s message? – Do you like it? Do you trust it? – Do you think it is acceptable as a piece of artwork today?

What issues are raised by what we have looked at today? Do you see any problems with this type of art work? If it can be called art.

Exam question based on what we have studied so far. No prep! In the exam you will not have the option to do so, so we do not now! Think: – Intro – explaining what you are going to do. – Main – answering the question – make sure this is really clear that you are answering the question!!! – Conclusion – brief analysis of what you have written.

Exam question based on what we have studied so far. a) With reference to the art of one religion you have studied, explain the contribution of art to worship. (30 marks) b) To what extent would you agree that the main purpose of religious art is to represent the divine? (15 marks)

Learning Objectives To identify modern Christian Propaganda works. To evaluate the purpose of the propaganda. To analyse whether such work is successful, or necessary. Success Criteria To evaluate the concept of Religious Art.
