doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0483-00-0psc Submission ETRI July 2011 Personal Space Term “Personal Space” –Originated from social psychology The region surrounding a person which they regard as psychologically theirs. –The notion of personal space comes from Edward T. Hall “The Hidden Dimension (1966)”, Intimate space < 1.5 feet Personal space < 4 feet Social space < 12 feet Public space < 25 feet –Invasion of personal space often leads to discomfort, anger, or anxiety –Personal space is also affected by a person's position in society with more affluent individuals demanding a larger personal space Slide 3 Source : Wikipedia

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0483-00-0psc Submission ETRI July 2011 Personalizing the Space Personalization –using technology to accommodate the differences between individuals –eliminate repetitive tasks recognize habits and shorten the path to engage in such habits –provide more specific information that is increasingly relevant to a person’s interests replace “average” information with information specific to that person’s environment –provide one-stop services accommodate unique personal preferences Personalizing the space –Make public space react differently between individuals based on implicit data –Feel the space within reach of any limb of an individual. Public space into Personal space –Exchange implicit data and explicit control among human & things in the public space of an individual –Profile based, behavior based, collaboration based Slide 4

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0483-00-0psc Submission ETRI July 2011 Specification of the Personalized Space Radius of public space which will be converted personal space –Sphere with 25 feet radius Number of communicators involving a collaboration for the personalized space –Gradually increasing from 3~4 to 60~80, or even more ? Communication type –peer-to-peer, 1-n, n-1 –n-m group-cast (group-chat) Traffic characteristics –delay tolerant data, real-time control, audio/video stream Requirements of communication for personalized space –Group based communication in public space –Number of communicators in public space will increase dramatically –Guarantee the various quality of service at once Personalized Space Communication –< 25 feet range –n-m groupcast –nx10 bps ~ m Mbps throughput –ms ~ min latency Slide 7

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0483-00-0psc Submission ETRI July 2011 How to Realize PSC Launching individual services –smart lighting service, smart conditioning service, … –design a customized network –can use technologies on the shelf, ZigBee, Bluetooth, WiFi, Cellular, … Construct personalization infrastructure –provide a common platform which runs various personalization Apps on –standardized personalization module equipped on things around –provide Apps development kit Do not try to sell a wireless network module, Let’s sell a personalization wireless socket Slide 8

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0483-00-0psc Submission ETRI July 2011 Slide 9 Proposed Scope of PSC Standard This is a standard for the person aware wireless communication. It supports for smart interactive devices to identify an individual person(‘s device) and to collaborate for providing personalized services. It defines an PHY and MAC needed to support its implementation. Specifically, it supports all of the following: –Positioning of > 20 person aware wireless devices around 10m within 1sec –Multiple links formation for > 3 multicast groups per a device –Variable link rate from 250 Kbps to 10 Mbps –Variable link setup from 10ms to 10sec –Multicasting from fixed device to nomadic mobile device –Operation in any of the regionally available license exempt frequency bands, such as 700MHz to 1GHz, and the 2.4 GHz band. This standard also provides mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the same band(s) including IEEE 802.11, 802.15, and 802.16 systems

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0483-00-0psc Submission ETRI July 2011 Proposed Purpose of PSC Standard The purpose is to facilitate coordination of smart interactive devices around daily life for personalizing the space for a person. The standard addresses the person aware wireless network infrastructure, positioning of a smart person aware device, n-to-m devices link connections, and various link setup according to the grade of service. For battery operated smart devices, to facilitate low energy operation the standard optimizes the link rate and the level of coordination. The positioning of devices, grouping of devices, and variable n-to-m link connection at the PHY and MAC layer required for this class of application have not been met with existing 802 standards.
