2 1. ALL MATTER IS MADE UP OF ATOMS  Solids are joined together tightly and maintain a constant shape and volume  Liquids are joined together loosely and maintain their shape but not their volume  Gases are not joined and do not maintain their shape or volume

3 2. MOLECULES ARE IN CONSTANT MOTION 1. Gas molecules are in constant random motion 2. Liquid molecules can rotate and vibrate 3. Solid molecules can only vibrate

5 3. COLLISION BETWEEN MOLECULES TRANSFERS ENERGY Similar to a newton’s cradle, a collision between the first two balls transfers energy to the next ones causing them to move as well

6 4. THERMAL ENERGY (HEAT) INCREASES MOLECULAR MOTION  The amount of energy that a particle has is directly related to the temperature

7 5. MOLECULES IN GASES DO NOT EXERT LARGE FORCES ON ONE ANOTHER UNLESS THEY COLLIDE
