20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland9 INT2LM: Changes in the last year 1.1 (11.04.05) –Initial operational version 1.2 (26.07.05) –External parameters for evergreen and deciduous forest –Bug corrections

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland10 LM: Plans for 2005 Consolidation of the new schemes Developments for CLM –Restart –NetCDF IO –Provision of timely varying boundary conditions for „constant“ parameters (rootdp, plcov, lai, etc.) FLake Model Grib code issues Bug corrections, optimizations,...

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland11 The Source Code Administrator (belonging to: Support Activities) The Source Code Administrator (formerly called NN1) gathers programming work done at the different centers and implements it into new source code versions. He checks that the work obeys to the Coding Standards and does a thoroughly testing of different LM configurations. For (proposed) Reference Versions he does tests for selected cases on ECMWF computers. Estimated time to do this: 20 % FTE

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland12 6.2: Running the Web Site Maintaining, updating, and mirroring the Web Site – Theodore can access and update the official web site in Athens again. –After technical problems, the official web site cosmo-model.org is accessible again Contents Managements –WG 6 tried to keep some pages up-to-date –But much information is out-dated –What to do?  see next slides

How to keep information on the WEB up-to-date

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland14 The Contents Manager The Contents Manager is responsible to keep the information on the web up-to-date. For that purpose he has an overview on the different pages and is in contact with the Responsible Authors of pages. He does not have to write the pages himself (at least not all) Together with the Web Master he helps the authors to put the contents of the pages into the proper format. The Contents Manager is the contact person for everybody who wants to put information on the web. Estimated time to do this work: 10 % FTE Estimated time necessary for the Web Master: 40 % FTE

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland19 The Documentation I: Dynamics and Numerics(RK scheme needs update) II: Physical Parameterizations(some chapters missing) III: Data Assimilation(latent heat nudging) IV: Implementation Documentationmissing V:Preprocessing(scientific description missing) VI:Postprocessingmissing VII:User‘s Guide(needs enhancement)

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland20 Newsletter and Technical Reports Newsletter No. 5 has been published in May Technical Reports No. 7 and No. 8 are on the Web –Hans Herzog, Almut Gaßmann: Lorenz and Charney- Phillips vertical grid experimentation using a compressible nonhydrostatic toy-model relevant to the fast-mode part of the LM –Chiara Marsigli, Andrea Montani, Tiziana Paccagnella: Evaluation of the performance of the COSMO-LEPS system

Management of the Documentation

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland22 The Editors The Editor of the Documentation compiles the work from the authors of the seven parts of the Description of the Nonhydrostatic Regional Model LM and takes care that the documentation is updated in time. He is the Responsible Author for the corresponding web page. (5 % FTE) The Editor of the Newsletter compiles the contributions from different authors for the COSMO Newsletter. He has to do the formatting and the layout of the Newsletter and is the Responsible Author for the corresponding web page. (20% FTE)

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland23 The Editors (II) The Editor of the Technical Reports supports authors to write reports in the appropriate format and makes a fine-tuning of the layout. He is the Responsible Author for the corresponding web page.(5% FTE)

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland24 6.4: INT2LM vs. Nesting Version A comparative study should be done to assess the quality of the two-way Nesting Version against the one-way nesting via the INT2LM But: There is no common interest of COSMO members in the two- way nesting any more.

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland25 6.5: Grib related issues There has been a proposal by MeteoSwiss for: –Definition of a COSMO table of generating processes –Clean implementation of Grib Code –Definition of an external Grib table The clean implementation of Grib Code can be brought to the model using a switch ldwd_grib, because DWD has to use the dirty implementation (because of postprocessing band database). The Table of generating processes and the External Grib Table need some more discussions about the practical implementation.

20.-23.09.20057th General COSMO Meeting ─ Zürich, Switzerland26 6.6.-6.8: The Rest Proposal for a set-up of a file-based data-assimilation suite –The contents have been discussed at the WG1/WG6 Workshop in Langen WG1/WG6 Workshop on Operational Implementations –Was held in Langen after the LM User Seminar –Not all members could participate!! Quality Management: Preparation of a Handbooklet „Development of LM within COSMO
