HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ We are able to provide classes that would not fill at one site and we can offer super electives with motivated teachers and students. DL gives us the ability to offer varied classes that budgets might not allow otherwise and offers the experiences of varied student populations. I like being able to meet different students via the network and expose my host students to academic challenge. We are able to teach classes with a special interest or to fulfill unique needs. Allows interaction between students with like interests from different schools. We have a wonderful relationship with our remote school. It is a pleasure to work with the aide there, she is an extraordinary professional. Great access to technology, teleconferences, student interaction with other schools. It offers the opportunity for students to interact with a broader base of peers. Also many of the courses offered (by myself and others at my home school) would likely not run due to low enrollment, were the class not offered through the DL Network. 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Lack of out of class time communication with students, difficult to make up missed class time, the administration at the school level is not fully supportive of school visits and field trips. Difficult to meet students after school for make-up, re-teaching, etc. is very difficult to arrange for receiving schools. Warehousing students who aren't appropriate to the elective being taught. Coordinating school schedules, receiving missed work, coordinating projects, can't move around the room. Not being able to "see" the students up close and personal. I try to make an effort to visit the receiving schools in person (so far I’ve visited Mayfield and Fort Edward) and its always surprising how different everyone is. Not getting to meet all students in person, not knowing information about remote students or school policies that I would know from my local school, frequent shortened schedules, assemblies, snow days, snow delays, etc., that mean remote students miss class. 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ All schools be required to have working computers in the room. All TA's be required to have working email. Pre-set up Blackboard accounts for every DL class or Pre-set up web pages for every DL class. I would build in one or two travel days a month to visit the other sites Built in Blackboard with every DL class. A mandatory 6th class each week after school from 2:30 to 3:10 pm. Larger televisions. As classes grow in size, the ability to see individual students is diminished, everyone must be "fit" into the picture and is therefore much "farther away" and difficult to see and more difficult to establish rapport with. Working more closely to match up schedules between host and receiving sites. More coordination before classes begin in September. I felt uncomfortable without a class roster and I didn’t have enough textbooks because I didn’t know how many students I would have. 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I was surprised at the interest level of my students and the great rapport that developed between the school districts. I was positively surprised, all my students at my remote site took the AP exams this year. When I first learned I would be teaching DL I was intimidated by the equipment but I found that most often things went smoother than I expected. I found that it heightens my teaching abilities and my alertness. I was surprised at how easy it is to use the technology and how effective it was. I became much more familiar with the districts in the receive site through visits and interaction with students. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It effectively meets the needs of the students as if all the students were at the home site. Students at one particular site lacked rapport with the other two sites. It got worse when the remote students at that site decided not to attend a field trip. One of the students informed me that they did not want to attend because they didn’t like the classmates. 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Pre-constructed notes were a big time saver. - I planned a field trip that actually worked this year. I have never used an ELMO in a classroom. It is an easy technology and great way to share handouts and pictures. ELMO is also great for doing guided notes with the students. Integrated music effectively via internet, field trips, I utilized ELMO a lot, was able to show authentic documents. I started using some online videos and connections to college websites. I used the Sympodium, Blackboard and blogs and more visual presentations using PowerPoint, the ELMO etc. We hosted several programs and review sessions for our remote students to come to our school. I offered bi-weekly extra help sessions over the system. I gave more “on your own” assignments so that students could put their time to effective use when the schedules did not match up. Comments 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ My distance students emailed assignments frequently. I often travelled to my remote sites to teach my DL students one-on-one. I worked after hours with remote students on the phone. Blackboard, email and telephone. I worked with the room aide via telephone. I give my students my email address, phone and cell phone numbers. Comments 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily …... distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 7. Did you visit your remote sites? No Yes No response

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2007 – 2008 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Once in mid September I invited students and aides to come on a field trip to my school for a special presentation. It increased my rapport with the students. I visited my remote school two or three times each quarter. One of my remote students traveled to evening review classes for the AP exam. There is a lack of administrative support to do so. I visited twice and went to several of my remote sites’ basketball games. Some of our home site students went to a play at the remote site. It is such a great distance that it is probably not cost effective. Having the remote students come here helped build rapport between the classes. I did visit the sites two times. It was great to do hands-on labs and activities. Comments 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)?
