Do Now 9/24: Write the definition of the green house effect in your notes. Greenhouse effect: gases in the lower troposphere that cause the greenhouse effect.

Greenhouse Gases Water Vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide

Greenhouse Gases Effect Allow visible light and UV and infrared radiation from the sun to pass through the troposphere. Earth’s surface absorbs solar energy and turns it into longer-wave length infrared radiation Some of this heat escapes into soace, some is absorbed by greenhouse gases. He from the greenhouse gases is then emitted into the troposphere.

Global Warming – Considerable scientific evidence and climate models indicate that large inputs of greenhouse gases from anthropogenic activities into the troposphere can enhance the natural greenhouse effect and change the earth’s climate in your lifetime.

Topography and Local Climate: Land Matters Interactions between land and oceans and disruptions of airflows by mountains and cities affect local climates. Heat is absorbed more slowly by water than by land. Ex. Of how land affcts the environment – Monsoons, Cities, Mountains Figure 5-8

Fig. 5-8, p. 105 Prevailing winds pick up moisture from an ocean. Dry habitats Moist habitats On the leeward side of the mountain range, air descends, warms, and Releases little moisture. On the windward side of a mountain range, air rises, cools, and releases moisture.

BIOMES: CLIMATE AND LIFE ON LAND Different climates lead to different communities of organisms, especially vegetation. – Biomes – large terrestrial regions characterized by similar climate, soil, plants, and animals. – Each biome contains many ecosystems whose communities have adapted to differences in climate, soil, and other environmental factors.

1.) Use figure 5-2 on pg. 101 to find the climate of the area you live in. 2.)Use figure 5-9 on pg. 106 to find what your biome should be for the area you live in. 3.) Use pages S12-S15 to the affect of our ecological foot print in the area you live in.

Turn and Talk How would our climate and biome be affected if our area did not have any wind?

Greenhouse Gases Draw a diagram or cartoon of how humans affect the natural Greenhouse effect. Please label, or explain your drawing. Hand into the inbox.
