1 Sustainability

2 SUSTAINABILITY - "MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE PRESENT WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE ABILITY OF FUTURE GENERATIONS TO MEET THEIR OWN NEEDS. "SUSTENIR - LATIN - "HOLD UP" - TO SUPPORT SOMETHING FROM BELOW, TO KEEP SOMETHING IN POSITION BY HOLDING IT FROM BELOW, TO MAINTAIN SOMETHING, TO MAKE SOMETHING CONTINUE TO EXIST. TO HOLD UP A SYSTEM OF BALANCE. SUM IT UP!

3 Sustainability Affects Renewability Renewable resources are generally living resources which can restock or renew themselves if they are used sustainably. Once renewable resources are consumed at a rate that exceeds the natural rate of replacement the stock will diminish and eventually run out. FLOW renewable resources do not need regeneration. Flow renewable resources include renewable energy sources such as: solar, geothermal, biomass, landfill gases, tides and wind. SUM IT UP!

4 Sustainable use affects non- renewable resources A non-renewable resource is a natural resource that exists in a fixed amount and cannot be remade, re-grown, or regenerated as fast as it is consumed and used up. SUM IT UP! (think about terms like conservation and extinction)
