Standpoint Theory

Standpoint theory provides a framework for understanding systems of power and how they shape our communication. 1. Constructed on the basis of knowledge generated from everyday lives of people 2. Proposes that the experiences, knowledges, and communication of individuals are largely shaped by the social groups of which they are members 3. Argues that individuals’ assertions and statements are subjective--there is no objective standard for measuring standpoints

Key Concepts A. Standpoint 1. Refers to a location, shared by a group, within the social structure that lends a particular kind of sense making to a person’s lived experiences. 2. Because standpoints are limited by our specific social locations, they are “partial” or incomplete

Concepts cont. B. Situated Knowledge 1. Refers to the idea that a person’s knowledge is rooted in context and circumstances 2. Our unique experiences cause us to develop knowledge that is rooted in context and circumstances.

Concepts cont. C. Sexual division of labor 1. Refers to the assignment of people to different tasks on the basis of sex and the exploitation that results from inequities in sex and wages 2. Domestic work is often viewed as being unworthy of wages
