Journal Read the following paragraph and summarize it. “Human rights are being violated on every continent. More people are oppressed than free. How can one not be sensitive to their plight? Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere. That applies also to Palestinians to whose plight I am sensitive but whose methods I deplore when they lead to violence. Violence is not the answer. Terrorism is the most dangerous of answers. They are frustrated, that is understandable, something must be done. The refugees and their misery. The children and their fear. The uprooted and their hopelessness. Something must be done about their situation.” –Elie Wiesel

Notecards A way to make sure you are not plagiarizing your paper

Direct Quotes Say exactly what they said

Summarize Main points

Paraphrase Everything they said but in your own words

Whether you use a direct quote, summary, or paraphrase you have to document with in-text citations where you found the information.

Every note card needs: Title Quote, summary or paraphrase In-text citation

Your note cards will look similar to this if it’s a quote What the Bermuda Triangle Is “The Bermuda Triangle is a region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean in which ships, planes, and people are alleged to have mysteriously vanished.” ("What is the Bermuda Triangle?", 2010)

…Or this if it’s a summary Some speculate that unknown and mysterious forces account for the unexplained disappearances, such as extraterrestrials capturing humans for study; the influence of the lost continent of Atlantis; vortices that suck objects into other dimensions; and other whimsical ideas. Some explanations are more grounded in science, if not in evidence. These include oceanic flatulence (methane gas erupting from ocean sediments) and disruptions in geomagnetic lines of flux. Explanation for the Bermuda Triangle The unexplained disappearances are due to extraterrestrials abducting humans, the affects of Atlantis, being sucked into another dimension, oceanic flatulence, or geomagnetic lines in flux. ("What is the Bermuda Triangle?", 2010)

…Or this if it’s a paraphrase Environmental considerations could explain many, if not most, of the disappearances. The majority of Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes pass through the Bermuda Triangle, and in the days prior to improved weather forecasting, these dangerous storms claimed many ships. Also, the Gulf Stream can cause rapid, sometimes violent, changes in weather. Explanation for the Bermuda Triangle The environment could be the better explanation for the majority of disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. In the Atlantic ocean tropical storms and hurricanes travel right through the Bermuda Triangle and proved the demise of many ships before the days of weather forecasting. The Gulf Stream, a current of warm water that flows from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Atlantic, can also result in quick and dramatic changes in the weather. ("What is the Bermuda Triangle?", 2010)

Practice: Summarize “As long as one dissident is in prison, our freedom will not be true. As long as one child is hungry, our life will be filled with anguish and shame. What all these victims need above all is to know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the quality of our freedom depends on theirs.” -Elie Wiesel Victims need to know they aren’t forgotten and we need to lend them our voices or our freedom isn’t really free. (Wiesel, 1986)

Practice: Paraphrase “As long as one dissident is in prison, our freedom will not be true. As long as one child is hungry, our life will be filled with anguish and shame. What all these victims need above all is to know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the quality of our freedom depends on theirs.” -Elie Wiesel As long as one person in prison for his beliefs or one child is hungry we are not really free. All victims need to understand they are not forgotten or alone. They need to know that when they can not speak for themselves that we will; we will be their voices. If we do not do this then our freedom will not feel like freedom. (Wiesel, 1986)

What is the difference? Summary Victims need to know they aren’t forgotten and we need to lend them our voices or our freedom isn’t really free. Paraphrase As long as one person in prison for his beliefs or one child is hungry we are not really free. All victims need to understand they are not forgotten or alone. They need to know that when they can not speak for themselves that we will; we will be their voices. If we do not do this then our freedom will not feel like freedom.
