What is Open-Source Software?  Open-Source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under an open-source license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software. (Wikipedia)  http://www.youtube.com /watch?v=27AGe1b0mnI http://www.youtube.com /watch?v=27AGe1b0mnI

Where Can You Get It?  From many places. The Source forge website hosts a wide variety of free and open source software. Each tool also usually has its own site, often created and maintained by volunteers who coordinate or moderate further development of the tool.  Discussion boards and lists are also common, to enable people who want to modify software to communicate with people who may already have done it, or who may be able to help in some way. (EIFL)

Why create open source software if it’s free?  Most open source software projects were created by a programmer who needed a piece of software to accomplish a certain task.  The programmer then creates the software from scratch. When a 2 nd programmer finds this software, they add to it to improve it.  Eventually, it is everywhere for free and the programmer doesn’t care because it is beneficial to the open source community. (Wikipedia)

What are some advantages/disadvantages for business of using Open-Source software? AdvantagesDisadvantages  Cost Is Free!  Try Before You Buy  Freedom  Customizability  Quality  Security  Disclosure of trade secrets. Having the code for a program available implies revealing how it works.  Loss of revenue through traditional sales. If the source is available, then it is unlikely that consumers will pay a large amount for a CD or license.

Examples of open-source operating systems  Apache HTTP Server- e-commerce platform  GNU/Linux- most successful  Mozilla Firefox- internet browser  Android- operating system (Wikipedia)

Do you ever use open source software?  Personally, I use open source software everyday, simply because my internet browser is Mozilla Firefox. Before this power point, I didn’t know it was considered open-source software and you probably use some sort of open- source software too and you just don’t know it!
